b. Survey local market for prevalent hire rate for machines in general.
c. Assume any missing data.

Q .1
A small construction firm owns following types of machines for construction works:-
a. Dozer D7G-7S
b. Loader 924F
c. Motor grader 120H
d. Excavator 311B
e. Dump truck D25D
f. Smooth drum vibratory roller CS-323C
The company has been subcontracted to lay 4 mile long, 18 in thick, 30 feet wide sub base of a
road project. The available sub base is required to be compacted to a dry density of 2400 Lbs/cy
and graded to design specifications.
Approved quarry site for material is a river bed located 12 miles away from project start. The
material is laid in layer of 2 feet thickness across the river bed and has a in situ density of 2150
Lbs/cy and will swell by 9% when loose. A well maintained 2 mile long level dirt track lead to
site from road head for movement of vehicles and plant.
The company intends completing this work in 2 months time. As a construction manager;
determine:-
a. List down the activities required for the complete project
b. How many pieces of equipment are required for each task.
c. How much volume of each material is to be handled.
d. What is the total project cost, assume data appropriately.
e. What mix of machine is required to perform this work most efficiently?

a. What is concrete mixer? What are different types of mixers in use on sites? Explain their
relevant merits briefly.
b. Your company is to deliver 4-5 in slump concrete through concrete pump to construction
site which is 200 ft high and 280 ft away horizontally. 5 in dia steel pipe connects the
delivery point through 3x90o bends and 50 feet flexible hose. Select a suitable pump from
nomogram for delivering concrete at 45 cy/hr with an efficiency of 75%.
Q . 3 What is the best foundation you recommend under following situations and why?

a Very low bearing capacity area less than 0. 25 tsf

b Strata with high water table , above foundation level

c Very hard stony strata

d In accessible river bed with verf fast water current
