What’s New

Facts 3.1

MAINTAIN CLEANING TOOLS, MATERIALS, AND EQUIPMENT

Proper selection and maintenance of equipment are important factors
to consider. Selecting the proper tool for the job and using the tool properly
will increase efficiency and reduce maintenance problems. Commercial
usage may entail more heavy-duty demands on equipment. Always follow the
routine “clean up while in use and clean up before keeping it.”

Tools and Equipment Care

 Perform basic preventive maintenance.
 Execute clean up practices on the tools and equipment that must be
maintained.
 Keep all cutting tools sharp. Use the right tool for the job.
 Ensure tools are safe working order. Attach a “do not use” tag to
damaged tools and notify the maintenance department.
 Clean up and pick up after as you go. Good maintenance practices on
the job site must be maintained.
 Manufacturer’s instructions for operation and maintenance should be
followed.
 All equipment must be inspected before and after use and all defects
should be reported.

Maid’s Cart or Trolley Care and Maintenance

 All soiled linen bags and trash bags should be emptied.
 Thorough cleaning of maid’s cart is done once a week. The wheels
may be oiled during the cleaning for smooth movement of the trolley.

SAFEKEEPING OF CLEANING TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

Hand Tools:
 Store hand tools in a clean dry storage area.
 Protect surfaces of cutting tools in storage.

Equipment:
 Store equipment in a clean dry storage area.
 Rinse and clean spray equipment after each use.
 Clean and check wheel-driven gears.
 Clean maid’s carts after use.
 Carts and trolleys should never be used as general dumping
grounds when not in use.
 When storing maid’s cart, it should be cleaned, stored and
locked.
 The storage area of maid’s cart and all other cleaning equipment
should be dry and well-ventilated.

Safekeeping of Cleaning Tools, Equipment, and Chemicals

 Provision should be made for correct storage of all equipment.
 There should be space for each machine.
 Shelves, cupboards, and drawers for all spare parts (e.g., mop
brush, mop heads, and mop pads) should be provided.
 Storage place should be equipped with power points.
 Proper lighting should be provided.

What I Can Do

Activity 3.1

Directions: Find a partner and observe if the standards and procedures

tackled in Fact 3.1 are properly demonstrated. After observing him/her, it’s
your turn now to be observed by your partner. Use the checklist below.
Check the box according to your observations. Take a picture while doing this
activity. (The pictures to be taken are in accordance with the tasks asked in
the checklist. So each of you is expected to have seven (7) pictures for this
activity)

The checklist consists of questions on

proper cleaning of tools and equipment.
The questions can be answered by
“YES” or “NO”.

STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES IN YES NO

CLEANING OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Do housekeeper read the manufacturer’s
instructions before cleaning the tools and
equipment?
Does he/she wear personal protective
equipment?
Does he/she inspect all the tools and
equipment before and after use?
Does he/she practice the routine “clean up
while in use and clean up before keeping it?”
Does he/she perform basic preventive
maintenance such as utilizing the tools’ and
equipment’s uses?

Common questions

Powered by AI

Housekeeping practices such as regular cleaning, proper storage, and preventive maintenance contribute to workplace safety by reducing slip-and-fall incidents and preventing equipment-related accidents. They enhance efficiency by ensuring equipment is in good working condition and readily accessible, improving response time and productivity in daily operations .

Regular tool inspection identifies defects and wear, allowing for timely repairs and replacement, which prevents equipment failure and extends the life of cleaning tools. By maintaining tools in optimal condition, housekeeping achieves consistent performance, reduces downtime, and controls maintenance costs .

Maintaining well-ventilated storage areas is crucial in preventing the buildup of moisture, which can lead to rust, corrosion, and mold growth on cleaning equipment. Proper ventilation helps preserve the longevity and performance of tools, prevents health hazards from mold exposure, and ensures a safer environment for staff .

Proper storage of cleaning tools contributes to effective housekeeping by ensuring tools are kept in a clean, dry environment, which prevents rust and damage. It also helps in easily locating tools when needed, maintaining equipment efficiency, and preventing potential safety hazards related to misplaced or improperly stored tools .

Improper handling of trolleys and equipment can lead to physical injuries such as strains or sprains, damage to equipment, increased maintenance costs, and reduced operational efficiency. It can also result in additional strain on staff, potentially resulting in staff turnover and increased healthcare costs .

Proper cleaning and maintenance of a maid's cart involve emptying all soiled linen bags and trash bags, thorough cleaning once a week, and oiling the wheels during cleaning for smooth movement. It's important to never use carts and trolleys as dumping grounds and to store them in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated space after cleaning and locking .

Not performing preventive maintenance can lead to equipment failure, decreased efficiency, and increased long-term costs due to repairs or replacements. It can also pose safety hazards to personnel and disrupt housekeeping operations due to unexpected downtime .

'Clean up while in use' is recommended because it helps maintain a tidy and safe working environment by reducing clutter and minimizing the risk of accidents. It ensures tools are in good condition and available for immediate use, increasing overall efficiency and productivity in housekeeping tasks .

Following manufacturer's instructions is crucial as it ensures the equipment is used correctly, which minimizes the risk of damage and extends the life of the equipment. It also helps maintain the safety and efficiency of the tools and equipment, reducing the likelihood of accidents and maintenance problems .

Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and masks provide a barrier against potential exposure to harmful cleaning chemicals and reduce the risk of injuries during manual tasks. They are necessary for maintaining health and safety standards, preventing workplace injuries, and ensuring compliance with occupational safety regulations .
