ABSTRACTION:
Communication embraces the variety of behaviors, processes and technologies by
which meaning is transmitted or derived from information (Encyclopedia of Knowledge,
International Edition, 2002). The term is used to describe diverse activities: conversation,
exchange of views, opinions or ideas, expression of feelings and emotional state of a person.
This focused observation on communication is specifically aimed at how the language, verbal
or non-verbal is used as a medium of interpersonal communication between and among the
pre-service teachers, the mentor and the learners.
There are several important elements of classroom management and one is being a
good communicator. The teacher establishes effective communication which includes verbal
and non-verbal behaviors. The teacher can also communicate clearly in a logical way using
language that learners can understand.

Teachers can model effective communication by demonstrating clarity in their speech, using language that is easily understood by students, and employing non-verbal cues that reinforce their words. They should exhibit active listening by making eye contact and asking follow-up questions that encourage students to express their thoughts. By showcasing respectful dialogue and conflict resolution during interactions, teachers set an example for students on how to communicate effectively in various contexts within the classroom .

Verbal communication, such as speaking clearly and using appropriate language, directly conveys information and instructions from teachers to students, helping to keep them informed and engaged. Non-verbal communication, including gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact, reinforces verbal messages and contributes to the emotional climate of the classroom. These non-verbal cues can capture students' attention, express encouragement, and provide feedback, thus fostering engagement and participation in the learning process .

Effective communication is crucial for classroom management and the learning process as it facilitates a clear and mutual understanding between teachers and students. It allows teachers to articulate instructions, expectations, and feedback effectively, ensuring that students comprehend and can act upon them. Furthermore, both verbal and non-verbal forms of communication help in creating a positive learning environment, fostering student engagement, and minimizing misunderstandings. This contributes to better management of classroom dynamics and enhances the learning experience .

Observation techniques to assess a teacher's communication effectiveness include actively noting verbal and non-verbal interactions, documenting instances of clarity and miscommunication, and evaluating the teacher's listening skills, such as whether they maintain eye contact and respond appropriately. Observers can also look for student reactions to teacher communication, such as engagement levels, comprehension responses, and class participation, to gauge how effectively the teacher communicates .

Misunderstandings in the classroom can arise from ineffective communication strategies such as unclear instructions, inappropriate language use, and neglect of non-verbal cues that could contradict verbal messages. Problems also occur if teachers fail to actively listen or interrupt students, leading to students feeling misunderstood or disrespected. Ineffective communication can create confusion, lower student engagement, and hinder learning outcomes .

Teachers should enhance both verbal and non-verbal communication skills to ensure they convey messages effectively, engage students, and build a supportive learning environment. Mastery of verbal communication helps articulate ideas and instructions clearly, while strong non-verbal communication can reinforce positive interactions and inspire confidence and trust. Together, these skills facilitate better teacher-student relationships and optimize the educational experience .

Balancing verbal and non-verbal communication is crucial for a teacher because it ensures that the message is delivered and understood effectively. Verbal communication provides the core content and instructions, while non-verbal communication supports these messages, adds emphasis, and helps convey emotions and attitudes. An effective balance reduces misunderstandings, aids in retaining student interest, and enhances the overall effectiveness of teaching strategies .

Non-verbal communication cues from teachers, such as facial expressions, gestures, and eye contact, strongly influence student behavior and perception. Positive non-verbal cues can encourage student participation, create a supportive classroom atmosphere, and convey teacher enthusiasm. Conversely, negative non-verbal signals, like closed body language or inattention, can lead to student disengagement and a perception of disinterest or disapproval, affecting classroom dynamics and learning outcomes .

Teachers can enhance their communication strategies by adopting an honest and tactful tone, choosing words carefully to avoid conflict, and thinking before speaking. They should focus on speaking clearly, taking turns in communication, and not interrupting others. Additionally, when listening, they should maintain eye contact and exhibit active listening behaviors. These strategies promote a more respectful and effective communication environment, which can lead to better understanding and improved student learning outcomes .

Essential communication skills for effective classroom management include clear articulation of expectations, active listening, and the ability to provide constructive feedback. Teachers must use non-verbal cues to reinforce verbal messages and manage emotions and conflicts with tactful and direct communication. These skills help establish a productive classroom environment where students feel respected and understood, which is crucial for managing classroom dynamics .
