Language Biography
The moment my mother gave birth to me and held tight in her arms; it embarks
the beginning of my journey into this world. Knowing and understanding nothing, not even the
words they speak, I just knew they were as if the happiest person in the world. I knew it felt like
we were connected. Then came my senses. Hearing the word “mahal kita, anak” from time to
time. I may not know nor understand it, but it makes me feel safe. “mama”. This is the first word
I spoke, looking at my mother, filled with joy as she hears her son speak. As I continue to grow
and develop myself, I was finally able to communicate with my mother by answering with “po
and opo”. I also knew how to count and comprehend the words they speak. As I attend schooling
for the first time, I have enhanced speaking in Filipino more fluently. Until I was able to
complete sentences like a grown up. As I adapt to the Filipino language more and more, I made
friends of my own in school and in our community. Made many memories and new learnings
each day. Until I was introduced to English. When I was a 1st grader, our teacher would require
us to speak in English and would punish us if we will speak in Tagalog. This became an
opportunity for me to learn a new language, however it was really hard for me that time and I
hated it. As time passes by, I was able to adapt to it and eventually became comfortable with it.
Whenever I play online games as a 4th grader, I would chat with random strangers in roblox and
use English as my language. As I enter high school from 7th grade to 10th grade, I was able to
practice my skills in speaking. I became a worship leader from our Catholic Charismatic
Community, and I would speak in front of many people. This is where I have learned to be
confident in speaking. On my 9th grade, surprisingly, I won as an Ambassador of Goodwill after
delivering the best answer in the Q&A portion. And in my 10th grade, I won 1st place in
Extemporaneous speaking. And on my final years as a high school student, until now, I have
brought the lessons I’ve learned. This is where I realized throughout my journey, my language
has helped me learn and communicate with my family and friends. It gave me an opportunity to
express myself and understand the people around me. As I grew older, the more I fell in love
with my mother tongue. Filipino language has a special place in my heart and mind.
