Course Objective: To familiarize the New Product Development process as a structured
methodology
UNIT I : Introduction 12 periods
Characteristics of Product development – Challenges; Development process – Planning,
concept development, system-level design, detail design, Testing & refinement and Production
ramp-up; Product planning identifying customer needs – Product specifications
UNIT II : Concept Generation, Selection & Testing 11 periods
Concept generation – methods & steps; Concept selection – Screening and scoring Concept
testing – Survey – Customer response – Interpretation of results. Concept embodiment and
systems modeling
UNIT III : Industrial Design 12 periods
Need for industrial design – Industrial design process – quality of industrial design; Design for
Manufacturing – design for assembly – design for environment – Robust design
UNIT IV : Economics of Product development 10 periods
Elements of Economic analysis – Economic analysis process – Base-case financial model –
Sensitivity analysis – qualitative analysis
Managing Projects
Understanding tasks – Project planning – Schedule – budget – risk plan – project execution –
evaluation.
