Understanding Basic Life Support (BLS)

Basic life support (BLS) involves providing initial emergency care to critically ill or injured patients. It includes assessing the patient, providing CPR and rescue breathing, controlling bleeding, and treating for shock. The key elements of BLS are initial assessment, airway management, oxygen therapy, and chest compressions. BLS is intended to preserve brain and heart function until definitive medical treatment can be given. It can be performed by trained medical professionals as well as laypeople, and teaches critical skills like CPR that can save lives during cardiac emergencies or choking incidents.

providers. It can be provided by trained medical personnel, such as emergency medical
technicians, and by qualified bystanders.

WHAT ARE THE 4 ELEMENTS OF BASIC LIFE SUPPORT?

- Basic Life Support (BLS-HCP) comprises cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and

many different elements. These include initial assessment, airway management, oxygen
therapy and chest compressions.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF BASIC LIFE SUPPORT?

- Basic life support (BLS) includes recognition of signs of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA),
heart attack, stroke, and foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO); cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR); and defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Different Types of CPR & Life Saving Courses

 Basic Life Support CPR. A basic life support CPR class (or BLS) is for anyone
wanting to obtain a CPR certification from the American Heart Association. ...
 Advanced Cardiac Life Support
 Pediatric Advanced Life Support
 Heart saver First Aid & CPR

Primary goal

The major objective of BLS is to provide oxygen to the heart and the brain and to sustain tissue
viability until definitive electrical or medical treatment [Advanced Cardiac Life Support = ACLS]
can restore spontaneous circulation.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF BASIC LIFE SUPPORT

Basic Life Support Training is essential because it teaches individuals how to properly
manage critical medical emergencies, such as cardiac arrest and obstructed airways.
Without immediate and appropriate attention, victims of cardiac arrest and obstructed airways
can lose their lives.
WHAT ARE THE SKILS TAUGHT UNDER BLS TRAINING COURSE?
