PRECAUTION ............................................... 3 Wiring Diagram ........................................................14 F
The Supplemental Restraint System such as “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along C
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. This system includes seat belt switch inputs and dual stage front air bag modules. The SRS
system uses the seat belt switches to determine the front air bag deployment, and may only deploy one front
air bag, depending on the severity of a collision and whether the front occupants are belted or unbelted. D
Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the SR and SB section of this Service Man-
ual.
WARNING: E
• To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death in
the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be performed by
an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer.
F
• Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to personal
injury caused by unintentional activation of the system. For removal of Spiral Cable and Air Bag
Module, see the SR section.
• Do not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this STC
Service Manual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or har-
ness connectors.
PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING POWER TOOLS (AIR OR ELECTRIC) AND HAMMERS H
WARNING:
• When working near the Airbag Diagnosis Sensor Unit or other Airbag System sensors with the Igni-
tion ON or engine running, DO NOT use air or electric power tools or strike near the sensor(s) with a I
hammer. Heavy vibration could activate the sensor(s) and deploy the air bag(s), possibly causing
serious injury.
• When using air or electric power tools or hammers, always switch the Ignition OFF, disconnect the J
battery, and wait at least 3 minutes before performing any service.

CAN (Controller Area Network) is a serial communication line for real time application. It is an on-vehicle mul- B
tiplex communication line with high data communication speed and excellent error detection ability. Many elec-
tronic control units are equipped onto a vehicle, and each control unit shares information and links with other
control units during operation (not independent). In CAN communication, control units are connected with 2
communication lines (CAN-H line, CAN-L line) allowing a high rate of information transmission with less wiring. C
Each control unit communicate data but selectively reads required data only.

Also, do not grip, collapse or apply excessive force to the connector.
4. Remove EPS control unit from steering column assembly.
5. Remove bracket from steering column assembly if necessary.
INSTALLATION
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
• Check that harness is not damaged when installing EPS control unit. Also, check that EPS control unit is
installed without trapping harness on foreign materials.
• After installing steering column assembly, perform self-diagnosis with CONSULT to ensure correct opera-
tion.
Under overload conditions, such as continuous full steering, the EPS control unit decreases its output signal to the EPS motor to prevent overheating. This results in a gradual decrease of assist torque, making the steering wheel turning force heavier. Normal assist torque levels revert when there is no steering .
Vehicle speed signals, transmitted via CAN communication from the ABS actuator and the combination meter, inform the EPS control unit about the current speed of the vehicle. This data is crucial for adjusting the assist torque appropriately, ensuring the right amount of steering assistance commensurate with driving conditions .
Activation of the fail-safe mode in the EPS control unit results in the immediate cessation of assist signals to the EPS motor, transitioning the steering to manual mode. This ensures continued vehicle control albeit with increased steering effort, maintaining safety by preventing uncontrolled steering assistance failures .
Troubleshooting unbalanced steering involves checking if the EPS warning lamp illuminates, verifying wheel alignment, examining the EPS control unit signal, and inspecting the torque sensor. If any discrepancies are found in these areas, adjustments or repairs must be made to address and resolve the steering imbalance .
Diagnosing a C1606 DTC code involves checking the EPS motor and associated components. The procedure includes conducting a component inspection to verify the normal operation of the EPS motor, inspecting the connectors for any damage, and if the inspection reveals an issue, replacing or repairing the faulty parts. This ensures the proper functioning of the EPS motor and control unit .
Precautions include ensuring the ignition switch is "OFF" and disconnecting the battery ground cable before connecting or disconnecting the EPS control unit harness connector. This is necessary because the battery voltage is applied to the EPS control unit even if the ignition switch is turned "OFF" to prevent electrical hazards or damage .
The EPS warning lamp serves as an indicator of the system's health. Upon ignition, it turns ON for a lamp check and turns OFF once the engine starts if the system is normal. If a malfunction is detected, it remains ON to indicate a system issue. This behavior helps detect errors such as data reception or CAN communication failures .
When a malfunction occurs, the EPS warning lamp on the combination meter turns ON, indicating to the driver that there is a system issue. The system enters a manual steering state, making the steering wheel harder to turn by increasing the required turning force .
The torque sensor detects the steering torque and transmits this data to the EPS control unit. This input is vital for the EPS control unit's calculations to generate the optimal assist torque for driving conditions. Without accurate torque detection, the system cannot ensure the appropriate level of steering assistance .
The CONSULT tool is essential for displaying diagnostic items, reading and erasing diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), and monitoring the input/output data from the EPS control unit. It helps in identifying malfunctions and recording freeze frame data at the moment a DTC is detected, aiding in precise troubleshooting of the EPS system .
