Understanding Cyberbullying Impacts

Cyberbullying involves bullying or harassment that occurs over the internet, most commonly among teenagers on social media. It includes threatening or insulting messages, rumors, personal information without consent, or labels intended to harm the victim. A proposed bill in the Philippines would fine or imprison cyberbullies to encourage responsible online behavior. The negative impacts of cyberbullying include increased distress, anger, lower self-esteem, isolation, and in some cases addiction or risky behaviors. Parents can help prevent cyberbullying by educating children about online safety, setting strong privacy settings, and monitoring their online activities and posts.

Good morning tech armies, a fresh day of learning

and studying has begun. I'm Maria Abegail Llido

from grade 8 Aristotle, and for today's video, we'll
discuss cyberbullying.
L: Abegail, are you familiar with cyberbullying?
A: Oh, cyberbullying, yes, I know what that is, why do
you ask?
L: Could you please tell me what exactly it is?
a: sure

Cyberbullying is a form of bullying or harassment

that occurs over the internet. It has become more
common as the digital environment has expanded
and technology has evolved, particularly among
teenagers. Cyberbullying occurs when someone,
usually a teenager, bullies or harasses others on
the internet and other digital platforms, most
notably social networking platforms. Harmful
bullying behavior includes the dissemination of
rumors, threats, sexual remarks, a victim's personal
information, or derogatory labels (i.e. hate speech).
Bullying or harassment is defined by repeated
behavior and bad intentions.
L; is that so?
A: yes, LAWRENCE
L: Abegail, do you know if cyberbullying can get you in
trouble with the law?

A bill has been introduced in the House of

Representatives to define and penalize "cyber-
bullying," which is defined as the act of posting
rude, offensive, or insulting messages about the
victim on the Internet.

"By criminalizing cyberbullying, people are

encouraged to become responsible netizens and
held accountable for their cyber-actions," the
author, Camarines Sur Rep. Rolando Andaya Jr.,
explained in an explanatory note.

"One such issue that has arisen as a result of

technological and social media advancement is
cyberbullying." "It has the potential to affect not
only school-aged children, but also anyone with
access to a mobile phone or the internet," Andaya
explained.
Cyber-bullies will face fines ranging from P50,000 to
P100,000, or imprisonment ranging from six months
to six years, or both, under House Bill 5718, or the
proposed "Anti Cyber-Bullying Act of 2015."
The bill requires the Commission on Information
and Communications Technology (CICT), the
Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Department of
Interior and Local Government (DILG) to develop
the necessary rules and regulations within 90 days
of its passage.
L: Oh, Abegail, you mentioned that "it has the potential to
affect not only school-aged children, but also anyone
with access to a mobile phone or the internet." What are
the negative impacts of cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying victims might feel increased distress,

as well as anger and frustration. They will express
this on various occasions, and it may lead to them
becoming addicted to the virtual world, where they
can have multiple identities to hide their true one.
Victims will have lower self-esteem because the
original goal of bullying is to lower self-esteem.
Bullying will cause them to isolate themselves from
their family and friends. They will begin to prefer
isolation and the use of dangerous substances
such as drugs and alcohol. Cyberbullying is a
serious issue, and going through such a difficult
time can be terrifying.
L: That's sad; in that case, how can we prevent
cyberbullying?
There are things that you can do to lessen the
likelihood that they will be the target of
cyberbullying, even though there is no foolproof
way to stop it from ever happening. This entails
taking precautions and continuing the conversation
about cyberbullying. You must talk about what
cyberbullying is, the dangers involved, and how it
can get worse. It's also critical to guide your
children and teenagers how to use social media
safely and responsibly, as well as what to do if they
are bullied online. It is important that your child use
passwords on everything to prevent cyberbullying
and similar behaviors such as scammers.
Passwords are one of the most effective ways to
protect accounts and devices. Assist them in
setting their privacy settings to the most secure
options. This includes making accounts private,
preventing people from tagging them, and requiring
others to obtain permission before sharing one of
their photos, among other things.
We should never give out our home address, phone
number, or email address online. They should be
cautious about sharing too much information about
their trips, especially if they have online friends or
followers they don't know well. Assist them in
developing the habit of taking some time before
posting. For example, they could create a post
offline and then return to it in an hour to decide
whether or not to post it. This will prevent them
from posting things they may later regret.

L: is that so, thankyou abegail I have gain new

knowledge because of you
A: welcome Lawrence, and remember avoid
bullying

and with that, our video comes to an end. I hope

you learned something. Thankyou for watching.

The digital nature of cyberbullying allows it to reach a wider audience more rapidly and persistently, as harmful content can be easily shared and accessed across platforms. Unlike traditional bullying, which can be physically contained, cyberbullying can occur at any time and place, making it harder for victims to find respite or escape. This amplification can intensify the psychological impact, leading to more severe consequences for victims .

Societal attitudes that normalize aggressive online behavior and technological advancements that expand digital connectivity can both increase cyberbullying incidents. With the growth of social media platforms, there are more opportunities for cyberbullies to operate anonymously, exacerbating the issue. Changing societal attitudes towards responsible online behavior and implementing technological solutions to detect and deter cyberbullying are essential to mitigate its prevalence .

Cyberbullying can lead to increased distress, anger, and frustration for victims. It often results in lowered self-esteem, social isolation, and potential addiction to the virtual world where victims may adopt multiple identities. Additionally, victims might turn to dangerous substances like drugs and alcohol and become more isolated from family and friends .

Legislative bodies can play a crucial role in cyberbullying prevention by enacting laws that define and penalize such behavior, thereby discouraging it. Proposed laws like the 'Anti Cyber-Bullying Act of 2015' offer frameworks for holding perpetrators accountable and protecting victims. While these proposals highlight the seriousness of the issue, their effectiveness depends on implementation and enforcement measures, collaboration with tech companies, and public awareness campaigns .

Beyond immediate emotional distress, cyberbullying can result in long-term psychological issues such as chronic depression, anxiety, and lowered self-esteem. Victims may develop trust issues, affecting future relationships and social interactions. Additionally, the stigmatization and isolation that often accompany cyberbullying can impede academic and professional opportunities, thereby influencing the victim's overall life trajectory .

Preventative measures include educating children and teenagers about cyberbullying, its dangers, and how to use social media safely and responsibly. Encouraging the use of strong passwords, setting strict privacy settings, avoiding sharing personal information online, and delaying posts for thoughtful consideration are essential steps. These measures lessen the likelihood of becoming a target of cyberbullying .
