and Active Voice.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators

both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

Lesson

1 Active and Passive Voice

Every day in our lives, we use active and passive voice. Before we talk about
active voice and passive voice, it is very important to know about voice. Voice
indicates whether the subject acts (doer) or is acted upon (receiver). In the following
activities, you will learn whether the sentence is active or passive and how to
change active to passive voice. Being able to determine it is very important for
effective communication both in written and oral context.

What’s In

Activity 1: Arrange the Words

Arrange the following scrambled words to form a sentence.

1. shoots/ the boy/ the ball

____________________________________________.
What is your answer?

The boy shoots the ball.

Is this your answer? If so, you are correct.

If not, do not worry for we will try another one.

In this sentence,who is the doer of the action? Is it “the boy” or “the ball?”
If you answered, “the boy”, you are right!

How about the receiver of the action? Is it “the boy” or “the ball?”
If you answered, “the ball”, then you are on the right track.

This sentence is called the Active Voice.

But we will try to learn that in the later part of this module.
Let’s try another one!

In this sentence, the doer of the action (subject) is the receiver of the action.

This sentence is called the Passive Voice.

While on a coffee break at work, two best friends, Mirajane and Lucy talked
about how they spent their ECQ lockdown.

Mirajane: Hi Lucy! It’s been a while since I last saw you. You look amazing! Staying
indoors for 2 months suits you well. What’s your secret?

Lucy: It was not easy! Since we are all advised to stay indoors, instead of just
staying in bed and doing nothing, the family decided to do something
worthwhile and productive!

Mirajane: Really? That’s interesting! What did you do?

Lucy: Well, first, my mom divided the chores to all of us. My brother cooks our
food while the dishes are washed by my sister and I clean the house.

Mirajane: Your mom did a great job in dividing all the household chores among all
of you. What else did you guys do?

Lucy:Yes, she did! It was her way of keeping us responsible. The house was
repaired by dad and art painting was mastered by my brother. We can’t
believe he has such talent. All the paintings were sold by mom online.
We got pretty good cash with it. They were bought in a good price.

Mirajane: Is that so? Wow I want to see his works! I have no talent in painting.

Lucy: You can’t believe his works. They’re superb! I have no talent in such also. In
my case, I focused on keeping my body healthy. I exercised a lot that’s
why I’m in a good shape right now. How about you?

Mirajene: That answers why you look so good right now! Well, I read a lot of
books. It is kind of boring, but reading is my thing. I finished all Paulo
Coelho’s novels.

Lucy: You’ve been a book lover ever since so I’m not surprised at all.

Mirajane: It just makes me sad because some of my books were put into garage
sale.

Lucy: (looking at her watch) Oh my, break time is almost over. Let’s go back to
work. Let’s talk again some other time.

Mirajane: Oh, I didn’t notice it. Sure Lucy, let’s catch up some other time. Send my
regards to your family.

Have you noticed the sentences in the dialogue? You’re right, the ones that are
highlighted are the active and passive sentences. Now let us try if you can identify
them.

What is It

The highlighted words in the dialogue that you have just read are examples of
active voice and passive voice.
When the subject of a sentence performs the verb’s action, we say that the
sentence is in the active voice. Sentences in the active voice have a strong, direct,
and clear tone. Here are some short and straightforward examples of active voice.

Examples: My brother cook sour food.

In this example, “My brother” (subject) is the doer of the action “cooks” and
“food” receives the action

A sentence is in the passive voice, on the other hand, when the subject is acted
on by the verb. The passive voice is always constructed with a conjugated form of to
be plus the verb’s past participle. Doing this usually generates a preposition as
well. That sounds much more complicated than it is—passive voice is actually quite
easy to detect. For this example of passive voice, we will transform the active
sentence above to illustrate the difference.

Examples: Our food is cooked by my brother.

In this example, take note that “my brother” is now acted upon by the verb
“cooks”, and the receiver of the action “food” becomes the subject. A preposition
“by” is also added in the passive voice.

Step 1: Identify the subject, the verb, and the object (SVO)

Step 3: Put a suitable auxiliary verb or helping verb

Step 4: Change the verb into past participle of the verb
