and deadlines. Aren’t you tired of walking through these realities of life? Well, we must say that these are
inevitable but it does not necessarily mean that we can’t take a break and breathe in.
In this module, we will climb another mountain but this time, it will be a mountain of learning,
enjoyment and fun. This will discuss the various forms and types of mountaineering based on different
circumstances. It will also showcase the importance of following the rules and safety in engaging oneself in
this form of recreational activity.
Learning what to do in hikes and climbs is essential and fun as well. Students who know how to
prepare for a hike will find this skill useful.

mainly for the pleasure of the climb.
HIKING – It is done on man-made road or well-made trails that is basically shorter in distance.
TREKKING – It is done over a variety of terrain and takes a longer time to hike.
BASIC FORMS OF MOUNTAINEERING
1. ROCK CLIMBING – It is the sport of climbing rock faces, especially with the aid of ropes and special
equipment.
2. ICE CLIMBING – It is the activity of ascending into inclined ice formations.
3. MIXED CLIMBING – It is the sport of climbing a combination of rocky and ice routes.
TYPES OF MOUNTAINEERING PEAKS BASED ON ACCESSIBILITY
1. OPEN PEAK – Everyone is allowed to climb this peak of mountain without any special permission.
2. PROTECTED PEAK – It is located on international borders and/or in sensitive and strategically
important areas of the country. Permission from the authorities is necessary.
TYPES OF MOUNTAINEERING PEAKS BASED ON STATUS
1. CLIMBED PEAK – It refers to the peaks that have been successfully climbed, at least once.
2. VIRGIN PEAK – It pertains to the peaks that are still unscaled, even once, though some already
attempted.
TYPES OF MOUTAINEERING PEAKS BASED ON DIFFICULTY
1. CLIMBING PEAK – This peak requires both special mountaineering gear and technical skills.
Generally, Generally, it is higher than other peaks, hence, it requires more time to
climb.
2. TREKKING PEAK – This peak neither require special equipment nor skills. Usually, a long hard trek.

EXERCISE
Directions: Philippines is known to be a country that is rich in natural resources, most especially in land

evidences provided. Limit your answers from 3-5 sentences only. Check the rubric for the
scoring.

1. You and your close friends want to spend your weekend together. After a thorough discussion, your
friends decided to do mountain trekking, however, none of you have any mountaineering gears and skills.
As a concerned Physical Education 4 student, how are you going to explain the importance of the use of

The three basic forms of mountaineering are rock climbing, ice climbing, and mixed climbing. Rock climbing involves climbing rock faces with the use of ropes and special equipment . Ice climbing is the activity of ascending inclined ice formations . Mixed climbing combines rocky and ice routes, requiring skills in both environments .

Following rules and safety protocols in mountaineering fosters a purposeful and healthy lifestyle by instilling discipline, accountability, and awareness in participants. Adhering to these standards promotes safety and reduces accidents, allowing enthusiasts to enjoy the activity's physical and mental health benefits fully. It encourages a culture of responsibility and respect for both nature and fellow climbers .

Recreational activities in mountainous regions, like mountaineering, are important for personal development and mental health as they offer individuals opportunities for physical fitness, stress relief, and mental clarity. Engaging in these activities enables participants to develop resilience, focus, and problem-solving skills, promoting both personal fulfillment and healthy coping strategies for daily life challenges .

To safely navigate a 'climbing peak,' one should employ strategies such as rigorous skill improvement in technical climbing, use of specialized mountaineering equipment, and thorough route planning. It's crucial to assess weather conditions continuously and to have contingency plans for emergencies. Employing a certified guide and ensuring communication devices are functional can further enhance safety on complex and demanding routes .

Understanding mountaineering skills and gear significantly affects safety during trekking by ensuring preparedness for unforeseen challenges. Lacking these can lead to dire situations during adverse conditions, like landslides, where unprepared individuals might not effectively manage emergencies . Students with proper knowledge advocate for and understand the critical nature of gear and skill proficiency to prevent accidents and enhance group safety.

Mountaineering peaks vary based on accessibility into open peaks and protected peaks. Open peaks allow anyone to climb without special permission, while protected peaks are in sensitive areas such as international borders, requiring permission from authorities . Understanding these differences is important for legal compliance and preparation, as accessing protected peaks involves additional bureaucratic procedures and potential geopolitical considerations.

Obtaining permission before climbing a 'protected peak' is critical due to regulatory, environmental, and safety considerations. Failure to do so could result in legal repercussions, fines, or forced evacuation by authorities. Furthermore, unauthorized access could lead to diplomatic disputes if the peak lies in sensitive areas, and might disrupt local ecosystems if regulations are not respected .

Differentiating between trekking and hiking enhances preparation by allowing individuals to tailor their preparation to the specific demands of each activity. Hiking is typically shorter with well-defined trails, requiring less gear and preparation, while trekking involves longer journeys over varied terrains, necessitating extensive stamina, more supplies, and sometimes overnight equipment . Properly distinguishing these activities ensures adequate resource planning and readiness.

Mountaineering without adequate preparation presents risks such as injury from falls, weather-related hazards, and getting lost. These risks can be mitigated by comprehensive training, proper gear usage, route planning, and remaining updated on weather forecasts. Additionally, maintaining clear communication with authorities and ensuring familiarity with emergency procedures are critical preventive measures .

Climbing a 'virgin peak' involves ethical considerations such as environmental impact, respecting indigenous and local cultures, and the potential commercialization impact post-climb. Climbers should conduct thorough impact assessments, seek dialogues with local communities, and strive for minimal ecological disturbance. They must balance the objective of exploration with the responsibility of sustainability and cultural sensitivity .
