Lesson 6: Speculative Fiction

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW:

After this module, you should be able to:

OVERVIEW:

Most of the people this generation are fun of watching movies with different
genres. Some especially the children love to watch fantasy and superhero, some like
horror and supernatural, and for some they want supernatural. The taste of the
Filipinos when it comes to the story evolved.
One of the 21st-century literary genres is speculative fiction or known as
literature of the fantasy. It is an umbrella term for different kinds of fiction that
speculate about worlds different from ours and tackle topics range from science,
fantasy, horror, supernatural, and superhero.
This module 7 features the speculative fiction and how this kind of writing
became well known to the Filipinos. Thus, the people love the different stories with
the variety of fictions that make the literary works more exciting and aesthetic.

Philippine Speculative Fiction

The Philippine Speculative Fiction had started in 2005 with the

personality of Dean Francis Alfar who produced an anthology of speculative
fiction written by the Filipinos who responded to his call as speculative texts.
But before 2005, there were many literary works published as part of the
cultures that were the same kind of speculative fiction.

Alfar continued the concept of the Philippine Speculative Fiction because

he knew that this kind of genre would be loved and liked by the Filipinos,
though it was already produced abroad. He also added that this kind of fiction is
an umbrella term included the types of stories classified as fantasy, horror, and
science fiction.

At this moment, speculative fiction is not popular only in other countries,

but also in the Philippines. Alfar’s remarkable contribution to the Philippine
literature inspired many famous Filipino writers to use speculative fiction as genre
of their literary piece. Some of the works also are already digitized or read online
by the avid readers especially the younger ones.

WHAT IS IT

ACTIVITY NO.1: Examining the Text

Directions: Read the following passage inside the box and answer the
following questions on a separate sheets of paper.

The house was largely haunted by a woman in white who appeared frequently on the
staircase, pale hand on the wooden balustrade, with a terrible look of hunger. What was
horrifying about her expression was not the bloodless skin, vein-webbed and tinged with
decay, nor the parted lips revealing a glistening tongue, but her eyes–hooded and staring,
widening slowly with black interest, the cracked irises suspended in the enlarged whites.
The face would tilt forward, the tongue becoming restless, the mouth slowly opening–enough
to make your heart pop, according to one witness.

1. What genre of speculative fiction is all about? Why?

Pedro Diyego was born with wings on his feet. They grew from the bones in his ankle
and spread out in a fan past his heel, plumes of brown flecked with white that made it
impossible for him to don footwear.

His mother Mereditha tried to remove the feathers when Pedro was still a child. They
were a family of some means, owning a decent- sized tract of land and their own rice mill,
so that she didn’t think it was proper to have her only son going around barefoot like the
farmers’ children. But how little Pedro shrieked and cried as with eyebrow tweezers his
mother yanked! And he did it for so long and so loudly that the chickens in their wooden
coop in the backyard stopped laying eggs for at least a week.
