Impact of Social Media on Student Performance

According to a 2018 report, the Philippines has very active social media usage, ranking highly on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. A 2016 study found that social media can increase student collaboration and engagement if used for team projects. However, many secondary students now spend most of their time on social media chatting and gaming instead of schoolwork, leading 85% to have academic difficulties and 65-75% to perform only at an average level. According to 2018 Digital Report, Philippines is one of the most active web-

based activities. It is declared to be the most active users on a number of web-based

social network sites, such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter.

According to Astodello, R.D. (2016), because of social media, it increases

student collaboration, improves participation, content rich resources and they are useful

for team projects. However, it has been observed too that the majority of the students

nowadays, particularly those in the secondary level, spend most of their time chatting

with their acquaintances, playing online games, and watching videos instead of reading

their lessons, making their assignments, and other academic requirements. As a result,

almost 85 percent of them were able cope with their academic difficulties and at least 65

to 75 percent of the class obtained the average level of performance. However,

students should be encouraged to limit the time they spend on social media sites and

be advised to rather substitute those hours with reading some learning materials – short

stories, novels, etc. to improve their vocabulary.

Strategies could include setting specific time limits for social media use, incorporating educational content into social media activities, and fostering awareness about the impact of excessive use on academic performance. Schools can organize workshops to educate students on effective time management and the benefits of substituting social media with educational readings. Additionally, parental controls and monitoring can help reinforce these practices at home.

Recommendations include encouraging students to limit social media usage and substitute time spent on social networks with reading educational materials such as short stories and novels. This strategy aims to enhance vocabulary and subsequently boost academic performance by fostering a more engagement with learning materials.

Reading materials such as novels and short stories can enhance academic performance by improving vocabulary and comprehension skills, which are vital for academic success. In contrast, social media activities often prioritize entertainment and socialization over depth and learning, making it less effective for educational development. Encouraging reading over social media can foster critical thinking and comprehension skills necessary for academic achievements.

Educators can leverage social media by incorporating it into collaborative projects, facilitating discussions, and providing supplementary content. By designing assignments that require interaction on social media platforms for educational purposes, students can benefit from peer learning and diversity of perspectives. However, it's crucial to set guidelines to prevent excessive non-academic use and ensure that engagements contribute positively to educational objectives.

Social media has increased student collaboration and improved participation by providing content-rich resources useful for team projects. Despite this, it has been noted that students, especially those at the secondary level, often spend more time on social media engaging in non-academic activities such as chatting and playing games rather than focusing on academic assignments.

Students face challenges in balancing social media use and academics, as they tend to prioritize activities like chatting and gaming over assignments and studying. This behavior adversely affects their academic performance, with many struggling to cope with academic demands. The suggested solution to improve this situation includes reducing social media time and increasing engagement with educational reading materials.

The Philippines is reported to have one of the most active user bases on social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. Students primarily engage in activities such as chatting with friends, playing online games, and watching videos instead of focusing on academic tasks.

Positively, social media enhances collaboration, participation, and access to resources necessary for team projects, potentially enriching the learning experience. Negatively, excessive non-academic use can lead to poor time management, reduced focus on academics, and a reliance on shallow content consumption. For instance, students in the Philippines spend more time with games and chats, impacting their academic performance and suggesting a need to manage and redirect social media use toward educational purposes.

Although social media helps in student collaboration and access to resources, students often mismanage their time, dedicating more to chatting and games than academics. This misalignment has resulted in 85% of students struggling with academics, with only 65 to 75% achieving average performance. To address this, students are advised to limit social media time and substitute it with reading to enhance vocabulary.

The pattern indicates that students who spend significant time on social media for non-academic purposes face academic challenges, with 85% of them experiencing difficulty in coping academically. Concurrently, a majority only achieve average performance levels. This suggests a strong correlation between non-academic social media use and academic struggles. Effective time management and a shift towards engaging with educational content could alleviate these challenges.
