As a 4th year BSCE student, I have three important things to share to my juniors: a) master the principle,

instead of memorizing the solutions; b) indulge in group studies and/or seek help from your seniors; and
c) your health is as important as your grades.

In Civil Engineering, understanding the problems comprehensively is a must, and you cannot achieve this
skill if you don’t solve multiple problems. As our previous department head said, and I quote, “The life of
civil engineering student is to solve, solve and solve”. Our mind can be trained like muscles. If our
muscles can recognize repetitive movements, our mind can also recognize repetitive concepts. By
solving more problems, you are making your mind accustomed to the process of finding solutions and
understanding problems better. You will also be able to determine different approaches to similar
problems.

Aside from solving on your own, there are also better chances of surviving the course if you have
someone to study with. When you are solving difficult problems, you can brainstorm over it and
compare answers afterwards. In that way, you will be able to determine how you got the wrong answer,
or how you got the correct answer. The saying, “The best way to learn is to teach”, is entirely true. In
that way, you will be able to better understand the concepts.

After all those endless solving and studying, it does not hurt to rest and recover. Take note that you
won’t be able to function at your best and solve problems effectively if you are tired, half-awake or
heartbroken. Always rest when you need to, and study if your body if your body can. You can force
yourself to study more than what your mind and body can, but you cannot force your health to be at its
top shape if you do so.
