Centrifugal Supercharger Overview

A centrifugal supercharger uses an impeller spinning at very high speeds to draw in air and increase its pressure using centrifugal force and stationary vanes. This makes each intake cycle more powerful by allowing more fuel to be burned. Centrifugal superchargers are efficient, lightweight, and attach to the front of the engine. They are commonly used in high-performance vehicles and can be installed as an aftermarket modification. This particular supercharger kit for a 1999 Ford Mustang GT increases horsepower by over 100 and is a complete plug-and-play system.

Air Compressor

Centrifugal Superchargers

A supercharger is an air compressor that increases the pressure or density of air supplied
to an internal combustion engine. This gives each intake cycle of the engine more
oxygen, letting it burn more fuel and do more work, thus increasing the power output.

A centrifugal supercharger powers an impeller – a device similar to a rotor

– at very high speeds to quickly draw air into a small compressor housing. Impeller
speeds can reach 50,000 to 60,000 RPM. As the air is drawn in at the hub of the
impeller, centrifugal force causes the air to radiate outward. That means the air leaves
the impeller at high speed but low pressure. A diffuser – a set of stationary vanes that
surround the impeller
– converts the high-speed, low-pressure air to low-speed, high-pressure air. Air
molecules slow down when they hit the vanes, which reduces the velocity of the airflow
and increases pressure.

Centrifugal superchargers are the most efficient and the most common of all forced
induction systems. They are small, lightweight and attach to the front of the engine
instead of the top. They also make a distinctive whine
as the engine revs up
– a quality that may turn heads out on the street. 2021 models with OEM superchargers
include the Jaguar XF, Dodge Charger, Volvo S90 and Ford Mustang.

Any of these superchargers can be added to a vehicle as an after-market enhancement.

Several companies offer kits that come with all of the parts necessary to install a
supercharger as a do-it-yourself project. In the world of funny cars and fuel racers, such
customization is an integral part of the sport. Several auto manufacturers also include
superchargers in their production models.

This Vortech Non-Intercooled supercharger system with a V3 Si head unit setup for the
1999 Ford Mustang GT 4.6 2V will get you 364 horsepower and 371 LB/FT of torque
on 7-9 psi of boost! This system is 100% complete, including high-flow fuel pump,
high-capacity fuel injectors, and EDM Chip. The tuning is for stock vehicles or those
with a cat back only, just bolt on and drive! Intercooler is pictured for reference only,
Air-to-Water intercooled is available for upgrade. The standard kit is satin finish. If you
have other modifications such as headers, mudpie, camshaft, etc. then look at the Tuner
kits.

A supercharger is driven from the engine's crankshaft by a belt, shaft or chain whereas
turbochargers obtain their power from a turbine which harvests energy from the engine's
exhaust gases. In simple terms a turbo is an air pump that enables more air to be
pumped into the engine at higher pressure.
