Hi kids! I’m Miss Melhem and today we’ll be learning about ICT. What is ICT?

ICT stands for Information and Communication Technology (Mishra, 2015).

We know technology has changed a lot over the years to improve communication,
access to education and everyday life (Guzel, 2017). Technology has become a very
popular tool in classrooms to help teachers and students (Rubagiza et al., 2011).
However, working in the digital world can have a big impact on our safety. We need
to use ICT ethically and responsibly to make sure we stay safe online.

Online safety has become a very big and common issue with technology. If you look
at the infographic resource, you can see some tips to keep yourself safe including
not sharing your personal information online, not talking to anyone online who you
don’t know, and not telling anyone your password! Another tip, which isn’t on the
infographic is checking the URL for certain phrases ending in .com and .org to make
sure they are authentic websites. If your digital safety does become at risk or you are
being cyber-bullied, you should immediately contact the e-safety commissioner, who
has resources and support services to help you. You should also tell a trusted adult
like your parents or even me! (Slide p 4).

Ethics is about knowing and practising right from wrong, and technology can cause a
lot of ethical issues. Using ICT safely means using technology in a way that does not
negatively affect yourselves or others (Mishra, 2015). Maintaining kind and polite
manners is a simple start to being ethical online (Mâță et al., 2020). Another key
example of being ethical online is rightfully acknowledging the authors of work you
use and only accessing resources from legitimate sites, so you don’t pirate their work
(van den Hoven et al., 2012). The computer ethics video tells us a story about two
workers who made unethical decisions to try and beat each other. We learnt about
the consequences of their actions and how the same thing could happen to us. If
someone is not acting ethically with you, don’t copy them, instead report them to
someone.

Now we’re gonna learn about how to use ICT responsibly and learn about the
consequences of misusing it. Examples of behaving responsibly online include
taking care of the equipment you use (Slide share), keeping passwords safe and
not sharing them with anyone (Slideshare), and making sure to log off after using
public devices. Another important note is to keep your personal and professional
lives separately online (slide p 6). It is very important to be careful about what you
post online because it makes up part of your digital identity and could affect you in
the future when you try applying for jobs. And remember that if you misuse
technology, your parents and I are allowed to stop you from using it again
(Slideshare).
