The Preservation and Rehabilitation of Filipino Architecture in Vigan
A. Project Background
Vigan is a well-known historic city with stunning architecture. Its style is one of the most
visible aspects of our surviving civilization. The town and its cultural vision that still stands now,
may or may not have grown challenges from the modernism of styles and patterns. Vigan is not
just recognized for its Historic City; it has also been designated as a "Heritage Center." A city
that has previously withstood several tragedies, calamities, and disasters. The town was created
500 years ago and is currently standing motionless, but with ongoing preservations beginning
with repairs and reinventions, it can outlast each passing day.
B. Project Objectives
Change is unavoidable in this contemporary world, but we wanted to build something that
we could remember from when our culture and aesthetics were prevalent. Nowadays, every
architectural design, from houses to buildings, was different from what we were accustomed to
seeing and styles; it was too contemporary and sophisticated. Filipino Architecture is unlike any
other architectural design that was being developed at the time. We would be glad to reuse and
learn from this design, mixing it with current designs while keeping the notion of Filipino
architectural design. We may reintroduce it in a contemporary civilization where we can live on,
stronger, without losing our wits and creativity in the long run. As a Filipino architect, it is our
responsibility to maintain what we view as original and genuine, which begins with our styles
and design. We don't see any problem if we keep it intact, where we don't simply sustain visitor
numbers, but it reflects on what we know it is ours. If we forget eventually, at least we have
masterpieces that will remind us of our own.
C. Plan, Timeline, and Budget
Scope
The outcome of this project is to maintain the Filipino Architecture in the city, whether
there will be new buildings or structures, upcoming commercial establishments, and making sure
that the original style used to build the houses will be retained but isn't compromised under
construction. To do the further project, the team needs to identify the most damaged
infrastructure in the city and repair and strengthen the material used to fix the structures. Next is
to utilized commercial spaces for proper circulation of tight spaces and spaces for people to
occupy. After utilizing the spaces for the tourist spots, the team will locate the areas prone to
earthquakes, maximizing the occupants' safety and preventing damage to the structure. Lastly,
the city of Vigan “Heritage Center” will be continuously maintained by our team every year to
protect its infrastructure. If there will be unfortunate events such as typhoons, earthquakes, or
fire, the team will have the emergency fund to repair any damage.
