Definition of Architecture

Architecture is both the process and the product of

sketching, conceiving, planning, designing, and
constructing buildings or other structures. Architectural
works, in the material form of buildings, are often
perceived as cultural symbols and as works of art.

PLAN
House and Building
Plan
A building is a physical structure on a plot of land that can be used for any purpose—
residential, commercial, industrial, etc.

A house is a physical structure on a plot of land that is specifically designed for people to
live in. It’s a residential structure that generally (due to legal and zoning requirements) is
restricted to a limited number of people. And the structure is designed to house only a
single family or group of people.
Importance of House and Building Plan

A house floor plan design shows the flow of spaces in a room,

indicating the footprints of furniture and the remaining area that is
available for circulation, they provide a way to visualize how people
will move through the space

Building plan is drawn to scale and presents a view of the house

from the top, giving the viewer a better idea of the connections
between spaces, the dimensions, the traffic pattern through the
home and other features. Often, it shows the placement of
furniture, appliances and other elements that are arranged within
each room
Sustainability Of Architecture

● Sustainable architecture is architecture that seeks to minimize the negative

environmental impact of buildings through improved efficiency and moderation in the
use of materials, energy, development space and the ecosystem at large.
● Sustainable architecture uses a conscious approach to energy and ecological
conservation in the design of the built environment.

Importance of Sustainability in Architecture -

Sustainable building practices reduce the negative effects of construction on the

environment by protecting existing ecosystems and biodiversity, and by reducing
CO2 emissions.

As you can see that pillars of this
monument are cracked due to lack of
care and maintenance.
Thus, people should take initiative to
conserve this rich heritage site, so
that the composite culture of India
can be preserved.
Differences between Old & New Architecture
Just like with differences between modern and old art and music forms, so it is
with architectural practices. Throughout history, trends have come and gone
and with the application of advancing technologies, buildings have also evolved
to become stronger and more resistant to natural disasters.

1) Genre - The ancient architecture was ornamental in nature. It was important to

veil the skeleton of the building with pilasters, carvings, paintings etc. While the
modern architecture is nothing but quite brutalize in nature. The sharp form of
buildings, minimal facades reflects the era in which we live in.

1) Horizontal V/S Vertical - Ancient structures were planned very splendidly,

spreading horizontally to unfathomable distances, literally. As a result the
buildings were spread out. Unfortunately the architects today have been denied
this privilege due to the shortage of spaces. They overcome the challenges
with a more compact plan and moving the spaces vertically. This scaled up the
trends of High rise buildings comings with its pros and cons which is a different
debate altogether.

3) Use of Materials - One of the most visible difference between the ancient buildings and the modern
ones is the use of materials. In the older times, stone and its derivatives were the basic or should I say
the only material used. Whether it’s the churches of medieval Europe or the Mosques in South East
Asia, one cannot imagine these structures without stone. On the other hand the modern buildings,
especially the high rise ones cannot be imagined without a glass façade.

Experience at Asiatic Society

Honestly my experience at the Asiatic Library was awesome. I learned many things like the
library was built in 1840 and this library is built in Neoclassical Style of architecture. It was built
by Colonel Thomas Cowper and Bombay Engineer. The founder of this library is Sir James
Mackintosh.
