ASSIGNMENT 2 FOR MODULE 2
PMEC2/PMEC2L (Machine Design 2 LEC/LAB)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Copy the question below and write your answer/s on a separate sheet of paper
with red margin, half inches all sides; take a picture and paste it in MSWord;
2. Save the file as PDF file (so that it cannot be edited once it is submitted);
3. Save it in your Google Drive (create your personal Google Drive if you don’t have one);
4. Link the assignment file in the Online Text of the PhilCST LMS (do not forget to check
the share permission in your Google Drive);
5. Please do not forget to include your name, course & year, and date of submission
on your answer sheet (short bond paper).
6. Assignments that will not follow the first five (5) instructions will not be accepted by
the LMS / Or will not be credited (corrected) by the instructor.
7. Submit your assignment on or before the deadline (the PhilCST LMS will not accept any
assignment after the deadline); and,
8. Please observe academic honesty (do not submit files that were already submitted by your
classmates).
9. Show complete solution. No solution, no score. Box your final answer.
QUESTION:
1. A rectangular key is used in a pulley connected to a line shaft at 15 kW and 600
rpm. If the shearing stress of key is 230 MPa, determine the force acting on key
length if key width is one-fourth of shaft diameter and key length is 1inch. (45kN)
2. A flat key is to be design for 75mm diameter shaft which will transmit 150 kW at
400rpm. If the allowable shearing stress is 200MPa and key width is 15mm,
determine the length of key.
3. A key (1 ¼” x 7/8”) is to be design for a 5in shaft which will transmit power of 201HP
at 6rps. If the allowable shear stress for the key is 90.252 MPa and the allowable
compressive stress is 117.72MPa, determine the following:
a) What is the torque that carried by the shaft? (3.9789 kN-m)
b) Force acting on a key in N
c) Length of key in inches under shearing stress (0.8622 in)
d) Length of key in inches under compressive stress
e) Safe length of key to be used
f) Axial force to remove the hub from the shaft if the coefficient is 0.42. (52634.4
N)
