Iser's Literary Theory: Reader Interaction

Wolfgang Iser argued that the meaning of a literary text is created through an interaction between the text and the reader. He claimed that reading is a creative process where the reader uses their imagination to determine the meaning, not just comprehending the "actual" words. Iser believed readers play an active role in shaping the text's meaning through interpreting unwritten aspects and connecting sentences together in different ways. According to Iser, the structure of reading is interactive and dialectical as the reader forms a "gestalt" or pattern of the text that is colored by their own perspectives and selection of what they focus on, not solely defined by the text itself.

Okay first of all before entering the mod of the mood about this discussion this topic based on

theories who give by Wolfgang Iser , by the book titled “The Reading Process: A P A”

Before we start we knowing that Iser was studied about English, German Literature, and Philosophy
at Leipzig. He received his doctor dissertation on the 18 century English novelist Henry Fielding. On
theories his said that and suggest literary work have a couple poles, the first one is artistic who
created by the author and the action who created by the reader, that pole refers to the realization
accomplished by the the reader. Here Iser was divine that text not only the “actual” but also the
“action” the flow of thought are involved the responding to a particular text.

So he claims that reading is a creative process the reader imaginations works out the meaning of the
text. Reading is a pleasure when is active and creative. And therefore now reading become a process
of creativity. The unwritten aspects of apparently superior scenes create the meanings. Unspoken
dialog draw the reader into action. The suggestion by writers will be shaping the meaning. (though
we might not notice it consciously).

Iser ever quote Virginia Woolf who analysing the works of Jane Austin. Woolf argues that Jane Austin
stimulated the readers, and expand meaning in the readers mind. She is presenting obviously a
trivial life scenes which carry broader enduring meanings. The stress is laid upon character. In the
main story which is inferior, Jane Austin’s greatness is packed.

And therefore Iser claims that reading is an interaction between a text and the person who reading.
He bring into a discussion the views of Roman Ingarden, and Lawrence Sterns. Ingarden is analyzing
the structure of a text and how it can be perceived analysed interpreted in multiple ways. Wheres
Sterns says that writer have to leave certain meanings for the imagination of the readers, thereby
meaning is created by and interaction which is very active between the author and the reader.
Accordingly literary works or text must be conceived planned and structured created to engage
imagination of the readers. But reading from the perspective of Iser is just an art, writing is just
writing.

The reader has to study sentences and analyse how they act upon another. Literary text must be
analysed in this manner. Literary text do not correspond to any objective reality of the text all the
meanings are within the framework of the text. They call by him as intentional sentence correlators,
as Ingarden says. Sentences link up in different ways to form more complex unit of meanings. These
created a different world. These complex sentence are intentionally co-related-in sequence. The
sentences are component part. They make statement, claims, observations, and convey information.
By doin this work sentences establish various perspective.

Iser is use a very interesting metaphor, he say that reader is climbing in through this vision of the
text. He enters into the world of the text. A sentence not only certain things directly, it also aims at
something beyond what it actually says. This is true of all sentence in literary works. This created
their ‘special quality’. The sentences has the structure of which is ‘foreshadowed’ by specific
content. (the author would give some directions some hints here and there for the reader to imagine
the meanings).

Iser is comparing reading to a real-life situation, each person will see a reflection of himself in what
his reading. He will naturally supply the missing links and read what he wants to read. He will
interpret the text from his perspective, just like what we do in real life. We understand things in the
way we want to understand, the reader will customize fact to his interpretation an d he will arrive at
his meanings.
A literary text can only picture things which are not there says Iser, another man Gilbert Ryle into the
argument he analysing imagination “how can a person fancy the he sees something, without
realizing that he is not seeing it?” and if a complex question.

So the example 1 if one sees mountain, he no longer imagine it

Example 2 when we read the novel and we see the movie based on it, we feel it differ from how we
imagine it

The picturing is one of activities through which we form the ‘gestalt’ of a literary text.

GESTALT means ‘pattern’ or ‘configuration’. This is involved the process of ‘anticipation’ and
‘retrospection’.

The gestalt is colored by our selection process. It is not given by the text itself. It rises from the
meeting between the written text and the individual mind of the reader. The unfolding of the text is
the consequence – it is a ‘living event’ – the resultant impression of lifelikeness. Hence the structure
of reading is ‘dialectical’ ‘interactive’ ‘biological’

And most of us not are unaware of the idea that he first describes

That the meaning of literary text are not created solely by the author and that the reader is not an
inert recipient of ideas.
