Understanding Reflection Transformations

Reflection is a transformation that flips a shape across a mirror line, maintaining equal distance from the line for both the original shape and its image. The reflected shape has opposite orientation but is congruent to the original. Specific rules for reflecting across the x-axis, y-axis, and diagonal lines are provided, along with steps for performing reflections on a coordinate grid.

REFLECTION

What is reflection?
Reflection is a type of transformation that flips a shape in a mirror line
(also called a line of reflection) so that each point is the same distance
from the mirror line as its reflected point.

// POINTS //

When reflecting a 2-D shape remember that:

 the shape and its image are of opposite orientation

 a 2-D shape and its image are congruent
 there is an equal distance from the mirror line to both the 2-D shape and
its reflected image

Rules for performing a reflection across an axis

1. Reflecting across the y-axis, the y-coordinates remain the same, the x-
coordinates change opposites.
2. Reflecting across the x-axis, the x-coordinates remain the same, the y-
coordinates change opposites.
3. Reflecting a 2-D shape across a diagonal line of reflection, both the x-
coordinates and y-coordinates of the vertices change.
How use reflections on a coordinate
grid
In order to reflect a shape on a coordinate grid:

1. Draw the mirror line.

2. Reflect the first point.
3. Reflect the other points.
4. Finish the diagram.
