Java Plum as Eco-Friendly Ink Alternative

This study examined the effectiveness of Java Plum (Syzgium cumini) as an ink for whiteboard markers. Researchers found that Java Plum contains Anthocyanin, which provides color. A mixture of 80% Java Plum and 20% alcohol produced the best ink, with a visible yet erasable color. Regular marker ink contains chemicals that are harmful, while Java Plum ink has natural and less harmful components. It was concluded that Java Plum can be used as an alternative ink if the mixture contains more Java Plum than alcohol. It is recommended to use a higher Java Plum concentration and methyl alcohol for future studies.

Summary of Findings, Conclusion and Recommendation

Summary of Findings

This research aims to identify the effectivity of Java Plum (Syzgium cumini) as an Ink for

Whiteboard Markers, based on the scent, color, erasability, usefulness, and intensity of the color,

compared to the whiteboard markers bought in a store.

Based on the gathered, analyzed, and interpreted data, the researchers came up with the

following findings presented in accordance with the research questions formulated in the

statement of the problem.

1. What does Java Plum contain to make it an alternative ink for marker?

The fruit Java Plum (Syzgium cumini) contains Anthocyanin that gives its color. Not

only Java Plum has it, but as well as other fruits like Mangosteen contains the said compound.

Fruits that contain Anthocyanin is very useful as a natural colorant.

2. What percent of the Java Plum mixture can yield the best ink?

In this study, the researchers did a 50-50 concentration of alcohol and Java Plum mixture.

The ink turned out to be too pale in color. So based on the result, the concentration of alcohol

and Java Plum mixture must be 80-20 so that the ink may be visible enough, and at the same

time, it still has its erasing ability.

3. What’s the difference between a regular ink of a marker and an ink of a marker that is

made out of Java Plum?

The regular ink of a marker contains chemicals that is harmful to both humans and

nature, chemicals such as polyester, petroleum synthetic, isopropyl, etc. while the ink of a

marker that is made out of Java Plum has natural components that is less harmful to humans and

is an eco-friendly product.

Conclusion

Based on the research done and the findings gathered, it is concluded that Java Plum

(Syzgium cumini) can be used as an alternative component to make ink for whiteboard markers,

provided that the amount of its mixture will be more than the amount of the alcohol to be use.

The result of this research applies to the alternative hypothesis, “Java Plum (Syzgium cumini)

could be an alternative ink for markers.”

Recommendation

The following are the recommendations by the researchers based on the findings and

conclusions:

It is recommended to do a mixture of ink that has more Java Plum content compared to

the alcohol content, for the color and ink to be more visible. It is also advised to future

researchers who will conduct the same research to do the appropriate extracting of the pigment

or the Anthocyanin, and use methyl alcohol instead of ethyl.
