Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

Markers play an important role in a student’s life. Markers are used for writing

reports, used to label notebooks, etc. and sometimes used in calligraphy. With the infinite

use of markers, producers cannot exactly tell the amount of supply needed by the

consumers or users.

Usually, the ink of the markers is made from chemical materials such as

polyester, petroleum synthetic, etc. These kinds of materials are usually harmful to the

health of the users and also to the health of the environment.

The said chemicals used in markers can cause skin problems like rashes, itching,

redness, eczema and dermatitis. It can also cause fungal or bacterial infection.

This being harmful to the environment gave an idea to some researchers to

perform a research on what could possibly be an alternative ingredient to create ink for

markers. The researchers taught of using Java Plum because of its attractive color and it

is not that popular to people in this generation, and they would like to reintroduce it to

them.

Java Plum has many benefits to humans which make it interesting to make a

marker out of it. Java Plum are low on calories, which makes them the perfect healthy

snack. It also contains bioactive phytochemicals that lessen the risk of liver disease.

They’re also known to be effective in treatment of diabetes

Statement of the Problem

General Problem: The ink of markers made out of Java Plum (Syzgium cumini)

is an alternative component to create ink for whiteboard markers

Specific Problem:

1. What does Java Plum contain to make it an alternative ink for markers?

2. What percent of the Java Plum mixture can yield the best ink?

3. What’s the difference between a regular ink of a marker and an ink of a

marker that made out of Java Plum?

Significance of the Study

Due to the lack of supply of markers, and the harmful components of it,

researchers wants to conduct a research on what could possibly be an alternative

ingredient to create ink for makers. Researchers aim to use an eco-friendly component to

create an alternative ink for markers. By using Java Plum, it’s a great way to reintroduce

the fruit to many people as it was not that popular in these days.

Making or finding an alternative ingredient for ink markers is a good way to

prevent unwanted effects of the chemical materials used in a regular marker. Doing this

research would also introduce to the public an alternative source of ink for markers that is

beneficial to both humans and nature.

Hypotheses

Ho: Java Plum (Syzgium cumini) could not be an alternative ink for markers

Ha: Java Plum (Syzgium cumini) could be an alternative ink for markers

Scope and Delimitation

To test the experiment, participants can be teachers and students from Pateros

Catholic School as they always use whiteboard markers in teaching and learning. The

marker will be tested by 20 teachers and 20 students from the Junior High School

Department.

Definition of Terms

1. Polyester: a synthetic resin in which the polymer units are linked by ester

groups, used chiefly to make synthetic textile fibers.

2. Petroleum Synthetic: Synthetic oil is a lubricant consisting of chemical

compounds that are artificially made. Synthetic lubricants can be

manufactured using chemically modified petroleum components rather

than whole crude oil.

3. Pigment: the natural coloring matter of animal or plant tissue.

Benefits of using natural ingredients like Java Plum in marker inks include the reduction of toxic chemicals, promoting human and environmental health, and offering renewable and biodegradable options that lessen the environmental impact . Limitations may involve ensuring stability and consistency of color, potential shorter shelf-life, and the need for additional research to optimize the ink formulation to match the performance of synthetic inks. Moreover, large-scale production might be challenged by the variability in natural ingredient quality and supply chain issues .

Java Plum is considered eco-friendly because it is a natural plant-based material that does not involve the harmful chemical processing typical of synthetic ink components like polyester and petroleum-derived substances . Scientifically, Java Plum contains bioactive compounds with health benefits and is biodegradable, reducing environmental pollution. Its use in ink production could lower the ecological footprint of markers by utilizing organic waste and decreasing reliance on non-renewable resources .

Traditional marker inks often contain chemical materials like polyester and petroleum synthetic compounds, which can be harmful to both human health and the environment. These chemicals can cause skin problems such as rashes, eczema, and fungal or bacterial infections . Using Java Plum as an alternative addresses these issues by providing an eco-friendly ink option that reduces reliance on harmful synthetic chemicals while promoting a natural and potentially safer alternative .

The introduction of Java Plum as an ink ingredient could renew interest in this fruit, reintroducing it to modern consumers who may not be familiar with its benefits. Java Plum is low in calories and contains bioactive phytochemicals that reduce the risk of liver disease and aid diabetes treatment, thus highlighting its health benefits . The application of this fruit in ink production could shift its perception from merely being a snack to a versatile, beneficial natural resource, increasing its demand and importance in sustainable practices .

Traditional marker inks often contain chemicals like polyester and petroleum synthetics, which can lead to skin conditions and systemic effects like rashes, itching, and dermatitis due to prolonged exposure . Java Plum-based inks, being natural, are potentially less irritating and hazardous, lacking the harsh synthetic compounds. While traditional inks pose recognized health risks, Java Plum inks are expected to be safer based on their botanical origin and existing knowledge about their lack of toxicity. However, comprehensive toxicity tests would be needed to confirm these benefits .

The research on Java Plum ink promotes the shift towards using sustainable supplies in schools by advocating for eco-friendly alternatives to traditional markers, often used in educational settings. This shift could encourage schools to prioritize sustainability in purchasing decisions, reduce exposure of students to potentially harmful chemicals, and instill environmentally conscious habits by demonstrating practical applications of sustainability in everyday school supplies. This proactive approach could also serve as a platform for sparking further student-driven research and innovation in sustainability .

The hypothesis suggests that Java Plum (Syzgium cumini) could serve as an alternative ink ingredient due to its natural origin and lack of synthetic chemicals . Accepting the hypothesis implies validating Java Plum as an environmentally sustainable and non-toxic alternative, which could lead to a wider adoption of natural inks in various industries, enhancing their ecological footprint. Rejecting it would mean reinforcing the current reliance on synthetic inks and possibly continuing the environmental and health issues associated with them. This evaluation influences future research directions and sustainability approaches in industrial chemical formulations .

Identifying the optimal Java Plum mixture percentage is crucial to achieving effective ink performance that matches or exceeds conventional standards. This aspect of formulation is significant as it directly impacts the ink's viscosity, drying time, color vibrancy, and usability on whiteboards. It relates to the study’s objectives by addressing the need for a viable, sustainable alternative that can compete with traditional markers in functionality while being safe and eco-friendly. This optimization ensures that Java Plum-based ink is practical and commercially feasible .

In testing Java Plum-based ink, experimental variables could include the concentration of Java Plum in the ink mixture, the type of binders or additives used, and the consistency of ink application. Challenges may involve ensuring consistent color quality, determining the optimal drying time, and assessing the ink’s longevity and reactivity on different surface types such as whiteboards. The research involves participants, including 20 teachers and 20 students, who provide feedback on the ink's usability, which introduces subjective bias and variability in user experience .

Introducing Java Plum as an ink ingredient challenges conventional marker chemistry by replacing synthetic polymers and petroleum-based substances with a bio-derived solution. This shift necessitates revisiting established chemical processes to accommodate natural variations inherent in botanical raw materials, such as plant pigment stability and binder compatibility. It requires innovative formulation strategies to achieve reliability and performance, addressing issues like shelf life, consistency, and efficacy, which are critical for commercial success. Furthermore, this challenge drives innovation in developing eco-friendly additives and preservatives .
