The Filipino moral characteristic that helped me address a challenging ethical dilemma
is being a family-oriented person. Filipinos are family-oriented because they place high
regard and prioritize their family before anything else.
When I was a freshmen college at Holy Angel University, I belonged to a group
where many of them were sneaking some money to their parents by telling them an
overstatement tuition fee. At first, I was amazed that they could do that thing to their
parents, and I think that is cool. Since I belong to that circle of friends and due to the
peer pressure, there was a time when I thought I should do what they were doing. When
I'm about to enroll for my 2nd year 1st semester, I plan to tell my parents about
overstatement tuition to keep the remaining money for myself. I plan to sneak some
cash to them because it was the lockdown season due to Covid-19 then. I didn't have
any money because my parents did not give me any allowance. After all, it was an
online class.
However, I still did not do it even though I was so much in need of money at that
time. I did not do it because my parents raised us to be family-oriented people with
concern, respect, generosity, and putting their family and loved ones at the core of their
priorities. Having thought of fooling my parents, I suddenly remember all my parents'
hard work and sacrifices they endured for our welfare and needs. Moreover, I also felt
guilty because, at lockdown time, my parents struggle with how to suffice their salary
with our daily needs. So, I realized that if I fooled my parents by overstating my tuition, I
would be a selfish person because I put my desire first over the needs of my family. In
addition, I also realized that I would rather be broke and don't have any new or trendy
things than get my wants, but it came from stealing and fooling my parents.
