Quarter 1 – Module 3B (Week 4):
GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE

Self-Learning Module
Introduction of the Lesson
Well done! You have had been able to finish the task provided in the second module.
Perseverance is a key to success. To persevere in completing task ahead, it is a sure way of getting a
good performance. Module 3 is all about Geometric Sequence. Like Arithmetic Sequence, it is one of
the special types of Sequence. As you go through with the Module, you will learn how to build up the
terms in the geometric sequence, finding the 𝑛𝑡ℎ term of the geometric sequence as well as its
geometric mean. You will be applying the skills learned in answering word problems too. You take
your time in answering it. If you find it obscure, please do go back and read the Module again.

You are expected to learn

This module is created for you to:

1. Determine the sum of the first 𝑛 terms of a geometric sequence

2. Solve problems involving geometric sequence.

LESSON 3

THE GEOMETRIC SERIES

Consider the problem.

A certain virus culture doubles in number every hour. If 1

virus is placed in a glass of beaker at 6 A.M., what is the
total number of viruses will be there at 12 noon?

The problem asks for the total numbers of viruses will there be at 12 noon. Let us illustrate
the problem using the table.

TIME 1st hour 2nd hour 3rd hour 4th hour 5th hour 6th hour
NUMBER OF VIRUSES 1 2 4 8 16 32

A geometric sequence 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 is formed. To get the total number of viruses, all the
terms in the geometric sequence are added 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + 32 = [Link] total number of
viruses at 12 noon is 63. The method used in getting the total number of viruses in a given time is
geometric series.

When the terms of a geometric sequence are added, the concept used is geometric series.
A geometric series is the sum of the terms in a geometric sequence.

There are two formulas to find the sum of the geometric series:
 If a geometric series has definite number of terms and 𝑟 ≠ 1

𝑎1 (1−𝑟 𝑛 )
𝑆𝑛 =
1−𝑟
when the first term 𝑎1 , the number of terms 𝑛 and the common ratio 𝑟 are given.

𝑎1 −𝑟𝑎𝑛
𝑆𝑛 =
1−𝑟
when the first term 𝑎1 , the last term 𝑎𝑛 and the common ratio 𝑟 are given but does not
require the number of terms.

 If a geometric series is infinite (that is, endless) and –1 < r < 1 and r > 1 or if r < –1

i. If –1 < r < 1, then the finite series have sum the formula is

𝑎1
𝑆𝑛 =
1−𝑟
when the first term 𝑎1 and the common ratio 𝑟 are given.

ii. If r > 1 or if r < –1, then the infinite series does not have a sum.

Here are examples.

1. When the first term 𝒂𝟏 , the number of terms 𝒏 and the common ratio 𝒓 are given.

Find the sum of the first five terms of the geometric series 2 + 8 + 32 + ⋯

Solution: Given: 𝑎1 = 2; 𝑟=4 𝑛=5 Solve for 𝑆𝑛 .

Substitute in the formula
𝑎1 (1 − 𝑟 𝑛 )
𝑆𝑛 =
1−𝑟
2(1 − 45 )
𝑆𝑛 =
1−4
2(1 − 1024)
𝑆𝑛 =
−3
2(−1023)
𝑆𝑛 =
−3
𝑆𝑛 = 682

Therefore, the sum of the first five terms is 682.

2. When the first term 𝒂𝟏 , the last term 𝒂𝒏 and the common ratio 𝒓 are given but DOES
NOT require the number of terms.

Find the sum of the geometric sequence when 𝑎1 = 1 , 𝑟 = 2 and 𝑎𝑛 = 32.

Solution: Given: 𝑎1 = 1; 𝑟=2 𝑎𝑛 = 32 Solve for 𝑆𝑛 .

Common questions

Powered by AI

To determine the sum of the first n terms of a geometric sequence when the first term (a1), the number of terms (n), and the common ratio (r) are given, you can use the formula S_n = a1(1 - r^n) / (1 - r), provided that r ≠ 1. This formula allows you to calculate the sum by substituting the given values directly into it .

For a geometric series to have no sum, it must be infinite with a common ratio r that is greater than 1 or less than -1. In such cases, the series does not converge to a finite value, thus not having a sum .

When given the first and last terms of a geometric sequence, the sum can be found using the formula S_n = (a1 - r * a_n) / (1 - r) without needing to know the number of terms explicitly. This approach works when the first term, last term, and common ratio are known, as it calculates the sum by balancing the growth from the first to the last term through geometric progression .

Word problems involving geometric sequences can be approached effectively by following these steps: Identify the question, plan the strategy using the appropriate formula for geometric sequences or series, solve by executing the plan, and verify the answer to ensure its correctness. Applying these steps helps in logically comprehending the problem and arriving at a solution .

When the common ratio of an infinite geometric series is within the range -1 < r < 1, the series converges and has a finite sum. The sum of such an infinite geometric series is given by the formula S_n = a1 / (1 - r) where a1 is the first term and r is the common ratio .

To calculate salary growth modeled by a geometric sequence with an annual increase, you identify the first term as the initial salary and the common ratio as 1 plus the percentage increase as a decimal. Using the nth term formula a_n = a1 * r^(n-1), where n is the number of years, the salary for any given year can be calculated by substituting the specific year into the formula. This models the compounded growth over the specified period .

A geometric series is convergent if its common ratio r is between -1 and 1 (exclusive). This condition ensures that as the number of terms approaches infinity, the terms get closer to zero, allowing the series to sum to a finite value. Conversely, if the common ratio is greater than 1 or less than -1, the series is divergent as the terms grow larger in magnitude, leading to an infinite sum .

A depreciating asset's value is modeled as a geometric sequence where the common ratio r is 1 minus the depreciation rate expressed as a decimal. The initial value forms the first term. The nth term formula, a_n = a1 * r^(n-1), calculates the asset value at any point in time by substituting the number of periods into the equation, thus accounting for the compound effect of depreciation over time .

A geometric sequence is a series of terms where each subsequent term is obtained by multiplying the previous term by a constant known as the common ratio. A geometric mean, however, is a term inserted between two numbers in a geometric sequence such that the ratio between successive terms remains consistent. It acts as the harmonic average of the two other values in the sequence .

Some geometric series do not require the explicit number of terms because they employ a formula that calculates the sum based on the first term and the common ratio while knowing the last term. This method is used particularly when it is impractical to determine the number of terms directly but when given conditions guarantee a formula that operates independently of the explicit count of terms, such as S_n = (a1 - r * a_n) / (1 - r).
