3 Installation of visionCATS

3.1 Architecture of visionCATS

The visionCATS software is based on a client/server architecture, in
which a single database and a single server is connected to a number
of clients and instrument services (i.e. a visionCATS cluster). In the
simplest case and by default in the installer, visionCATS consists in a
single server, client and instrument service installed locally. Additional
installations in the same cluster will be client installations only.

Full installation (server/client/instrument service):

During a full installation, the database and the visionCATS server are
installed. Additionally, the client and the instrument service are installed
by default (see Installation procedure for more details).

Client installation (starting with the second installation in a cluster):

A client installation installs the visionCATS client. Additionally, the
3
visionCATS
instrument service is installed by default (see Installation procedure for
more details).

visionCATS architecture

3.2 PC minimal specification

For the minimal specifications to install visionCATS, check CAMAG SOP
306 visionCATS environmental specification.

3.3 Installation procedure

The visionCATS installation requires to be explicitly launched by an user
with administrator rights. Run the installer by using the Run as
administrator command. Make sure you have the latest Windows
updates and drivers installed. The installation will fail if Windows is
already installing updates or if a reboot is pending.
At installation the PC should have the final name and should be in the
finally used domain (name change of PC and/or domain after
installation is not supported). All PCs of one visionCATS installation
need to be in the same domain.
4
visionCATS
• Insert the DVD into the DVD drive, browse the DVD drive and start
the installation by right-clicking the [Link] file and
selecting Run as administrator.

• If Windows Firewall is activated, you will probably see the following

warning. Indeed, the visionCATS installer tries to communicate with
previous installations of visionCATS and, in case of a client
installation, tries to contact the server installation. Please hit Allow
access (or perform the modification manually in Windows Firewall)
to configure your Windows Firewall accordingly:

Note: Depending on the firewall currently activated, you may see

either warning popups or no popup at all. In this last case, you will
have to check your firewall settings manually
• Accept license terms and follow the instructions
• Select installation mode

5
visionCATS

Installation decision: full, client, server only or advanced

In the Mode tab:

• Full (default): installs the Server, Client HPTLC PRO Instrument
Service and HPTLC Instrument Service components. Use this
option:
o For a standalone installation
o To install a non-virtualized Server of a cluster installation
on a machine that could eventually access to CAMAG
instruments
• Client: installs the visionCATS Client application
o Specify the host name and port of the server. A host name
or IP address can be entered directly if not present in the
drop down list.
o Server only: use this option to install the server of a
clustered installation, eventually on a virtual machine.
o The Advanced mode leads the user to the Mode Advanced
sub-tab: In this mode, the user can choose separately all
components and ports.

6
visionCATS

Do not change the server p o r t and instrument port without a

serious reason! If you have to change the ports, note the changed
values in the log-book of the software or at a respective document.

When updating, always update the server before the client(s).

• Choose the location of the program, the images and other data

The data will be accessed with the Local System account. Network
drive will not be accessible. Please check that this account has access
to the specified folder

• Active User Management. CAMAG recommends switching user

7
visionCATS
management off during the first installation. This option can be activated
/ defined later

• Install the client(s). For each succeeding installation in the same cluster
choose Client and search for the respective machine the server is installed
on. A client can be installed with or without an instrument service (you
need an instrument service if you want to connect one or more
instrument on the computer). If you want to install several visionCATS
clients in office places, where you will never connect any instrument,
these clients can be installed without instrument service, so that only
needed instrument services would be registered in the system.

In order for your visionCATS server to appear, the client and server
hosts should be on the same network and have File Sharing enabled
(available in Network and Sharing Center).

For IT administrators, visionCATS also provides installation automation

by using command-line arguments. Please contact your local CAMAG
distributor for more information.

Troubleshooting:
At any momement, if some error occurs, you can get all log files related
to the visionCATS installation, by clicking on the below left button.

8
visionCATS

3.4 Licensing
As most of the professional software programs, visionCATS uses an
activation system to control the accessibility to its features. The license
defines:
• How much clients can be bound to the visionCATS installation,
• The available edition/options (each edition contains a set of options)
• The available additional options,
• The available instruments.
Consequently, the whole installation is controlled with a single license.
The visionCATS registration procedure consists in three main steps:
• The generation of a license request directly from visionCATS,
• The validation the license request, performed by your local
visionCATS distributor, producing a license key,
• The activation of the visionCATS installation, by entering the serial
number and license key in visionCATS.
During this steps, your visionCATS installation will/can be in the
9
visionCATS
following states:
• Evaluation: When performing a brand new installation of
visionCATS, you get an evaluation period of 60 days. During the
evaluation period, you can use all visionCATS features except the
Method Library and the 21CFR Part 11 compliance, you can use
all CAMAG instruments and you can connect up to 10 visionCATS
clients.
• Waiting for approval: this state is reached when the license request
is generated. In this state, the requested options/additional
options are granted during 5 days.
• Licensed: This state is reached after having successfully activated
the visionCATS installation, which grants the requested clients,
edition, options, additional options and instruments permanently.
• Not licensed: This state is reached when the evaluation period or
the waiting for approval period is expired. In this state, all the
features of visionCATS are disabled except the licensing part.

Activation
To activate your visionCATS installation:
• Open <Options> <Request License Key (new installation)> or <View
License> (in case of an upgrade) <Introduction> and read the
instructions if you don’t know them.
• Go to the <Registration> tab and fill or update the corresponding
fields.

• Go to the <Request validation> tab, click on the <Generate

validation> link button and confirm. This generates the validation
link.

10
visionCATS

Your local CAMAG distributor will either scan the QR code or validate
the license directly. If you have to send him/her the validation link,
simply click on the <Copy link to clipboard button> and paste the link
in your preferred email or messaging software.

• Your CAMAG distributor will validate the request and give the
serial number and license key to you. Go to the <License key
validation> tab, fill the serial number and the license key, and
click on the <Activate> button.

The license key can only succeed if it corresponds to the license

request. The activation will fail if another license request has been
11
visionCATS
generated in the meantime

In case of an upgrade, you normally keep your serial number.

• Open Options ‣ View license to check your license.

Upgrades
When upgrading the visionCATS Server (by reinstalling visionCATS in a
newer version), you keep the granted features/instruments (or the
equivalent ones if editions/options have changed between the versions).
But you need to re-activate your existing license. However, you will need
a new license key if:
• You want to connect more visionCATS clients than the amount of
clients granted by your current license,
• You want to use new CAMAG instruments, options and/or
additional options,
• You have restored a backup on another machine.

Re-activating your existing license

After upgrading visionCATS, when starting the client you will see the
following popup, and every functions would be disabled:

• Open <Options> <View License> <Registration>, and click on the

12
visionCATS
Generate validation link button and confirm. This generates the
validation link.

Contrary to the normal activation, for the upgrade, the activation can
be done directly by the customer (the distributor is not involved).

You can validate the license directly or use the QR code to access
Internet via a cell phone if needed.

• The validation button or the QR code will send you to a to special page
of the CAMAG Licensing website (no login needed):

• Click on the <Validate license request> button, and you will see your
new license key:

13
visionCATS

• In visionCATS, go to the <License key validation> tab, fill the license key
(the serial number remains the same), and click on the <Activate>
button.

3.5 Backup
Your visionCATS data is stored in a database and in a set of folders (for
example for pictures taken with a TLC Visualizer/TLC Visualizer 2, TLC
Scanner 3/4 profiles and spectrum data), under the image location path
configured during the installation procedure. A backup strategy needs
to be chosen in order to prevent any unwanted data loss. Depending
on your situation, you may want or be required to rely on a global
backup solution provided by your IT department, such as automatic
backups of entire machines. Or, you may want to perform specific
backups of visionCATS data, in which case you can use the visionCATS
Backup Tool located in the server’s installation directory. The backup
process generates a dump file (or folder) of all data (database and
image folder). With the manual restore process, it is possible to restore
the whole data. The backup data file has to be stored in a safe place

CAMAG strongly recommends to backup data regularly!

To restore lost data, a backup procedure can be activated.
A physical backup of the database is not a proper way to save the data
produced with visionCATS and will lead to data loss if a restore would
be needed! CAMAG strongly recommends performing regular backups.

Manual backup procedure

• Start the [Link] in the visionCATS folder.

14
visionCATS

• Choose <Backup Assistant>

• If you need a plain folder backup, check the box.

• Click on <Next>

15
visionCATS

• Choose the folder to save the backup (choose a destination where

regular backups are done) and click on OK

The backups will be done by using the Local System account. Network
drives won’t be accessible. Please check that this account has access to
the specified folder.

• Close the tool or go back to start screen when the status bar has
reached 100%. All your visionCATS data is now safe.

Scheduling backup
• Start the [Link] in the visionCATS folder.
16
visionCATS
• Choose <Schedule Assistant>

By default, no backup is scheduled. When one of the two Scheduled

options is activated, the visionCATS’s server performs a verification every
hour (it therefore needs to be running) to check if the last backup done
is late. If it’s late, the <Scheduled via automatic backups> will perform
the backup automatically and directly. The <Scheduled via manual
backups> will display a warning when you open a visionCATS client, and
you’ll have to perform a manual backup. In both cases, visionCATS offers
many usual scheduling configuration options you have to configure,
based on the following constraints:
Performing a backup may require some time, may consume CPU power
and perform many hard drive operations or network accesses (when
storing the backups on a remote folder). We recommend you to select a
time outside the working hours.
Configure an appropriate frequency of backups. A higher frequency will
reduce the potential data loss but will reduce your ability to restore a
backup from a specific date, depending on the number of backups kept.
ZIP backup is the easyest way for handling backup files.
Performing plain folder backups gives you the possibility to use an
external tool to make differential backup. It isn’t recommend to use it
otherwise, as it will take more space.

Automatic backup

17
visionCATS

With automatic backup, your data will be backed up automatically, at

the frequency of your choice (set in the <Options>) and in the folder of
your choice.
If you need a plain folder backup, check the box.

The backups will be done by using the Local System account (account
user by the visionCATS server by default). Your current user account
often doesn’t have the same rights, that’s why a check of the folder is
automatically done by the server itself to indicate whether the desired
destination folder is valid or not.

For a backup on a PC with network drive (at this example CM463PB-

WS10) proceed as follows:

Go to “Computer Management”

18
visionCATS

Go to Shared Folder /Shares, right click and chose “New”

19
visionCATS
Specify the path were the backup has to be stored

Note:
As network share drive mapping (mapped network drive letter) is user
specific, it will not work for the backup, therefore the UNC (Universal
Naming Convention) address should be used instead!

The UNC syntax for Windows systems has the following generic form:
\\ComputerName\ShardedFolder\Resource

Add a description if needed

20
visionCATS

Customize the shared folder permissions

Choose “Everyone” and press “Add”

21
visionCATS

Click “Object Types…”

Specify the object types respectively

22
visionCATS

Enter the machine where the backup is performed (in this example
CMVISIONTEST01)

And click “OK”

Customize the permission respectively

23
visionCATS

Click “OK“

Finalize the sharing process

The share should be shown as follows in the computer management

screen:
24
visionCATS

After the restart of the backup tool, the backup should be possible:

Make a scheduled backup to test if the backup is done successfully

25
visionCATS
3.6 Restore procedure
It’s now possible to restore backups coming from previous versions of
visionCATS. In this case the Backup Tool will display the same messages
as the one during the migration when installing.
• Start the backup program “[Link]” in the
visionCATS installation folder
• Choose “Restore Assistant”
• Click on “Next”

• Choose the last backup file (or the backup folder when using
plain folder backup)

• Start the restore processes with “open”

4 Installation of HPTLC PRO Module driver

• Connect the instrument to the PC
• Switch the instrument on
• Open the device manager
• Right click on the unknown USB device
• Start the driver installation with right mouse click on the unknown USB
device

5 Installation of USB – to RS232 adapter

To control CAMAG instruments, a connection between the computer
and the instrument has to be established. The CAMAG instruments
are equipped with a serial port (RS232). Therefore the computer needs
one or more (depending on the number of connected instruments)
RS232 ports. If there is no RS232 port or not enough ports available,
26
visionCATS
CAMAG provides you with an easy and fast solution. With this USB to
RS232 adapter (CAMAG order no 958.0608) you can connect up to 4
instruments via one USB port.

USB to RS232 adapter

To install the adapter, simply connect it to any USB port of the

computer, start the exe file found in the “USB to RS232 adapter”
folder on the visionCATS installation disc and proceed as indicated on
the screen.

27
visionCATS

5.1 Troubleshooting
Cables are the most common sources of trouble with external devices.
Check the following:
• USB cable is properly inserted at both ends?
• Computer and instrument power is ON?
• Computer is not in Sleep or Standby?
• If a USB Hub is used, be sure it is set for “Self-Powered” operation
• If a USB Hub is used, be sure all cables are properly inserted
• If all the above are OK, the Yellow LED should be lit, indicating
the device has been recognized by the USB subsystem

6 Installation of TLC Visualizer and TLC Visualizer 2 camera

6.1 USB3 Camera for TLC Visualizer 2

In order to work with the USB Camera, visionCATS requires the
installation of the appropriate camera driver on the PC. The related
driver files can be found on the visionCATS installation media in the
“drivers” directory.

Installation procedure:
• In the Baumer Camera Directory choose the sub directory
appropriate to the instrument and current operation system.
Double click the “bdriver_usbxx.msi” file and follow the
instructions on screen
6.2 FireWire Camera for TLC Visualizer
If a TLC Visualizer is connected to the computer, the Baumer-specific
driver for the FireWire card (OHCI driver) has to be installed as well
as the Camera driver.
If the drivers are not the correct versions, CAMAG cannot guarantee
correct function of the camera.

OHCI driver installation

• Open Device Manager, check for “IEEE1394 host controller”, right

click on the entry representing the controller connected to your
camera and select “Update Driver Software”
• Do not allow Windows to search automatically for drivers.
Manually search on the visionCATS disk for the correct driver

28

• Make sure the compatible hardware checkbox is active
• Use “have Disc” to search the visionCATS disc
• Choose your format (x64 for 64 bit, x86 for 32bit)
• Choose OHCI
• Choose the respective chip set
If the chip set used in the FireWire card is not listed, do not try to
install another driver. Change the FireWire card to a product with a
supported chip set

Camera driver installation

• Connect the camera with the computer

• Do not accept any driver installation yet
• Open Device Manager, check for “Baumer_Optronic&Camera”,
right click on this device and select “Update Driver Software”.
• Do not allow Windows to search automatically for drivers.
Manually search on the visionCATS disk for the correct driver
• Choose “ choose from a list of drivers”
• Browse the visionCATS disc for the correct driver and install it
• Restart your pc
If the Visualizer is not recognized by visionCATS check the following:
• Is the instrument switched on?
• Is the camera (FireWire) and the Visualizer (serial) connected with
the pc?
• Is the green light at the back of the camera on?
• Are the firmware of camera and Visualizer up to date?

7 Update of instrument firmware

To control a CAMAG instrument by visionCATS, you need the

corresponding firmware version.

7.1 For instruments with USB connection (HPTLC PRO)

• Open visionCATS
• Double click on the respective Module at the instrument window
• Go to the “Firmware” subtab
• Choose “Launch firmware update” with the below shown settings

29
visionCATS

7.2 For instruments with RS232 connection

You can find the relevant firmware version and update program on
the visionCATS installation disc under “Instrument Firmware”
• To update the firmware of a CAMAG instrument:
• Shut down visionCATS

Do not switch off the computer or the instrument during the

firmware update process, as this could cause serious damages
to your CAMAG instruments!

• Press the reset button on your instrument keypad and observe the
30
visionCATS
LCD display. During the first few seconds of the initialization the
instrument display will show the actual firmware version. Check
if the new firmware version is displayed

7.3 For the FireWire camera of TLC Visualizer

The firmware update can only be executed from a 32- bit operating
system WinXP or Win7 32-bit
• If the system the camera is connected is a 64 bit version, use
another Computer or Notebook with a 32-bit operating system
for the firmware update. Do NOT use the Notebook with its
built-in battery; connect the Notebook to an AC wall outlet
• Insert the visionCATS disc in the DVD drive of the connected
computer and search for the FW update program
• To perform a successful firmware update, the camera has to be
installed properly (check device manager) on the update-
computer
• For Win7 32-bit systems, no firmware update is needed (for
FW1.8.0)
• Copy the folder “firmware” with its content to your local drive
• Start the [Link] program found in the new created di-
rectory and check the current Firmware in the camera
• The window will show the existing Firmware in the camera – in
the example below, version 1.8.0 from 23/03/2005. If the
existing Firmware is not version 1.9.0 or higher, proceed with
the firmware update
• Click Update button to start the update of the camera firmware.

Be very careful: do NOT unplug the camera or terminate the update

program during the update. This might lead to severe damage to the
camera!
