Host J: We are your kachikahan Jocelyn Caleza and my partner Dianne Kaye Piañar, and for today’s
episode of pod-due we will be talking about some of the many issues in the Philippines, it is the issue
about “ ABORTION” on whether;
- Is abortion moral or an immoral act?
- What are the causes of abortion? Or What leads someone to abort a baby?
- Should abortion be legalized in the Philippines or not?
- The pros and cons of abortion
- And lastly how can we connect abortion to Natural law and Utilitarianism.
J: We will be jumping straight to our business (topic) after a short break (Commercial) so stay tuned.
(Commercial)
D: And we are back, I guess this topic or issue is quite familiar to you, right mate?
J: Yes mate you’re right, ive heard it quite a lot.
D: and I guess our podcast viewers are also familiar with our topic today so Abortion, an abortion is a
procedure to end a pregnancy. . The pregnancy is ended either by taking medicines or having a surgical
procedure. It is a process of killing a baby or a fetus I must say without even giving the baby a chance to
be born and experience his/her precious life here in the world.
As we all know or not everyone I guess, Abortion is not a very new issue here in the Philippines even
from other countries it has been a very famous issue circulating around up until these days, up to this
generation. Mostly the people who commit this issue are the young ones, the teens that are afraid to
get caught or afraid to be disowned by their parents, the people who were a victim of rape, teens who
got pregnant due to the influence of alcoholic drinks and the people who are still not ready to take
responsibility to be a mother.
J: Mate do you think Abortion is considered a moral or immoral act?
D: For me mate abortion is morally wrong and killing is never been right.
- Well abortion is seriously morally wrong because it is an act of killing a being with a right to life,
it robs such a being of its future of great value like ours.
For most people they believed that abortion is morally wrong because it is basically a murder
case, it is an intentional act, you are obviously killing a baby and you are robbing its freedom to
live and experience life. But for some people, especially the people who were a victim of rape,
some of them believed that abortion is okay, because giving birth to a baby, a son/daughter of a
rapist and a product of rape, it will only remember them the traumatic scene they have
experienced and they will never forget that experience. Hence of the reason, there should not a
baby be blamed and suffer from the perpetrator’s fault, they should not be robbed of the
freedom to live. 5
J: So the causes of abortion or what leads someone to abort a baby,
- As what I have mentioned earlier some people commit this issue because they are afraid to get
caught or afraid to be disowned by their parents, they are afraid to get judge and be talked
negatively or they are still not ready to take responsibility to be a mother and some causes
might be health issues.
- One of the reasons for having an abortion might be the health state of the fetus. There are some
tests that can be performed in order to see whether the little one is going to be healthy after
getting born.
D: Also another important reason of abortion is the health of the mother mate, if the life of the mother
to be threatened by the pregnancy. There are numerous health problems that could be made worse by
childbirth.
- When looking for the reasons of abortion we should also think about the anatomy of the uterus.
In case of some conditions it is the anatomy that doesn’t allow the fetus to develop as it should
and so it is likely to suffer an abortion.
- Smoking, We all know that it’s not good to be smoking during pregnancy, but only a few people
would think that this could be one of the causes of abortion.
- Alcohol, A glass of wine seems harmless, right? In case you take drinking to the extremes, it
might become a reason of abortion. As you can see there are numerous causes of abortion and
in case of some of them you would have never thought about them.
D: Should abortion be legalized in the Philippines or not? What are your thoughts about this question
mate?
J: For me mate, I think abortion should not be legalized in our country because if you think of it mate
being legalized people will just be taking advantage of that law, they will just continue doing sexual
intercourse because they know they can just abort the baby later on, so it’s a very no no to me mate.
- The issue of abortion is a controversial topic in the Philippines, despite being a Catholic country.
There are some women rights group In the Philippines that are pushing for the legalization of
abortion. They point out that abortion Is already rampant in the Philippines. These abortions are
usually done in make-shift clinics by people who often have no professional medical
background.
- This puts the mother in a dangerous and life- heartening situation, with 8 out of 10 of these
women develop complications. With these findings, pro-choice groups believe that if abortion
would be legalized, abortion will now take place in medical settings, ensuring the safety of the
mother. They also emphasize that victims of rape. Incest, and sexual trafficking who become
pregnant , it is hard for the victim to develop love and affection towards the unborn baby, so
they should be given the right for abortion since they did not plan on having a baby in the first
place. Every pregnancy is different from each other. Some women have planned It for years
while others get pregnant by “accident. For many, they believe that getting an abortion can
solve this and suffering that these women must have undergone. However, I can say that if
there is someone that must be punished because of the abuse, it must be the perpetrators. The
unborn child must not be harmed since it did not choose to be made. It never inflicted pain
towards its mother.
J: Yes mate, I think that abortion should not be legalized in the Philippines. Based in the Article 1 1,
Section 12 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution, the state must protect the life of the mother and the
unborn. Abortion, therefore, is unconstitutional. If ever, but unlikely, a new constitution will be
drafted and will legalize abortion in the country, this will pave the way for new ethical issues to
arise. (D) And also mate people then will argue that if abortion is legal, then why not legalize this or
that. In the years to come, the Philippines will be a country that only values the wants and comforts
of its citizenry, and not the sanctity of life. I believe that the government should strengthen their
campaign against abortion. It should also provide comprehensive assistance to victims of sexual
abuse in order to help them overcome psychological stress to avoid opting for abortion, and guide
them on how to raise their children.
J: We will continue our broadcast after a short break (Commercial)
(Commercial)
- And we are back, so now let’s continue and talk about the pros and cons of abortion.
(Pros of Abortion)
- One of the good things about abortion is that when it is completed legally, it’s a generally safe
procedure with few medical risks, especially when performed early in the pregnancy. Thousands
of abortions are completed successfully every year, and most women experience only mild side
effects.
D: And also mate, abortion is an option for women who are not ready to raise a baby. This can lead
to additional abortion benefits; it allows women to continue pursuing their educational or career
goals and work toward greater financial stability.
- Yes mate you are right, abortion gives women control of their bodies, and the ability to choose
abortion allows women greater control over the choice of whether and when to have children.
Abortion is an option for women facing life-threatening conditions.
- There are also several abortion cons to take into consideration. Many women weighing their
unplanned pregnancy options ultimately decide against abortion because they have personal
emotional, spiritual, financial or logistical problems with abortion.
D: Abortion can involve some minor health risks and side effects. These include pain, discomfort,
bleeding, infection and, in rare cases, injury to internal organs or reactions to the medicine given.
Abortion can have psychological consequences. Abortion can be costly, it is certainly less expensive
than raising a child to adulthood, but the medical procedure isn’t always cheap. In some states,
abortion requires parental consent. This is a major con of abortion for young women who do not
want their parents to know about their unplanned pregnancy.
- Women who choose abortion may face harsh judgement from others. Some women also face
harsh criticism from friends, family members and others who know about and disagree with
their abortion decision.
D: Now if we connect this issue, abortion to natural law, it is against the law and morally wrong kay
killing is an immoral doing and it is stated in the laws of God that thou shall not kill in the case of
abortion we are merely killing a child who weren't nit born yet.
If humans law are not consistent with the Natural Law, then we shall not follow it. Stated nis
Natural law if ang abortion kay himuon og legal kay dli na siya align sa law nga gihatag ni God.
For all who follow Natural Law, abortion is morally abhorrent because it break two of these
primary precepts. By killing a foetus one is no longer preserving life, and one would not be
reproducing as naturally desired. An act of abortion is directly aimed at stopping the process of
reproduction and therefore goes directly against the Natural Law ethic.
J: While in Utilitarianism naman, Utilitarianism is the thought of actions is right if they bring happiness or
it benefits to the majority of population right mate?
D. Yes mate, you’re right.
So if we connect abortion to the Utilitarianism I would say it can benefit the world’s population if a baby
was aborted rather than taking giving birth. So if abortion takes place then dli na madagdagan ang bilang
sa populations sa is aka country and with that it can benefit many people kay na prevent man ang
pagdaghan sa population. If the parents of that supposed to be a child cannot raise that child or would
be alone (ma single parent) then it would be better if they proceed nga ipaabort nalang ang bata
because it would put less burden on the society. There is a problem in the world and the abortion of
unwanted child would be a great help. Society as a whole could benefit from abortions in certain cases
like it will not add up to the number of the country’s population.
So in Utilitarianism, we can say that the action which is the abortion is a moral and it benefits many
people happiness. Although sakit siya sa part sa inahan but wala man siyay choice kay dli paman niya
kaya nga buhion iyahang anak so she choose to get an abortion para sa iyahang satisfaction and para sad
sa kadaghanan para walay mahasol if she cannot provide for her baby.
J: Very well said mate, Okay, that’s all we have for you today and before we end our podcast let’s do a
quick recap.
Abortion is a procedure to end a pregnancy.
The pregnancy is ended either by taking medicines or having a surgical procedure. Abortion is seriously
morally wrong because it is an act of killing a being with a right to life. Causes of abortion can be some
people commit this issue because they are afraid to get caught or afraid to be disowned by their
parents, they are afraid to get judge and they are still not ready to take responsibility to be a mother
and some causes might be health issues. And abortion should not be legalized, what the country, our
country should implement is that a strict family planning. We should protect the life of the mother and
the unborn child. the good things about abortion is that when it is completed legally, it’s a generally safe
procedure with few medical risks. Abortion gives women control of their bodies, and the ability to
choose abortion allows women greater control over the choice of whether and when to have children.
In some cases, a woman chooses abortion because continuing her pregnancy would put her life at risk.
While abortion can be the best option for women in certain circumstances, it’s not the right choice for
everyone. There are also several abortion cons to take into consideration. Many women weighing their
unplanned pregnancy options ultimately decide against abortion because they have personal emotional,
spiritual, financial or logistical problems with abortion. Abortion can involve some minor health risks and
side effects, abortion can have psychological consequences.
