A. LESSON PREVIEW/REVIEW
Venn Diagram is an illustration that uses circles to show the relationships among things or finite groups of things.
Circles that overlap have a commonality while circles that do not overlap do not share those traits. Venn diagrams help
to visually represent the similarities and differences between two concepts.
Construct a Venn diagram illustrating the similarities and differences of different organelles found between animal cell
and plant cell.

B. MAIN LESSON
Osmosis is when water moves from an area of LOW solute concentration (low osmolarity) to an area of HIGH solute
concentration (high osmolarity) through a semipermeable membrane.
Osmosis is one of the most important ways that plants and animals achieve homeostasis. Keeping the body's
conditions stable makes it possible for living things to survive.
Osmosis plays an important role in the human body, especially in the gastro-intestinal system and the kidneys.
Osmosis helps you get nutrients out of food. It also gets waste products out of your blood.
Dialysis is a process that is like osmosis. Osmosis is the process in which there is a diffusion of a solvent through
a semipermeable membrane.
MATERIALS:
Glass slides Stirring rod Iodine solution
Microscope Cellophane bag Silver nitrate solution
Lancet 1% starch solution Beaker
0.3% NaCl solution
1% NaCl chloroform
0.9% NaCl solution
5% NaCl solution 0.5M urea
PROCEDURE:
Before
1. Use equipment only for its designated purpose.
2. Make sure you have complete materials and equipment. Wash them before use and check if everything is in good
condition.
3. To avoid mix-up and cross-contamination, organize and segregate the set of chemical reagents and equipment
needed in different procedure.
4. Make a label of the reagents or materials that you will use.
5. The acquired reagents should be put into an appropriate receiving and holding vessels such as test tube for liquids
and watch glass for solids.
During
A. OSMOTIC BEHAVIOUR OF RED BLOOD CELLS
1. Obtain a blood sample by pricking your group mate’s ring finger with the use of a lancet.
2. Prepare 6 clean glass slides.
3. Place a drop of blood on each glass slide
4. Place 1 drop of each of the following solutions:
a. 0.3% NaCl solution
b. 0.9% NaCl solution
c. 5% NaCl solution
d. 0.5M urea
e. chloroform
5. Examine the 6 glass slides under the microscope.
6. On a separate sheet of paper make a drawing of each observation describing what happened in each or the
appearance of each (Draw the microscopic appearance of the following):
a. RBC under hypotonic solution
b. RBC under hypertonic solution
c. RBC under isotonic solution

B. DIALYSIS
1. In a small cellophane bag, put 5ml of 1% starch solution and 25ml of 1% NaCl solution
2. Tie a string around the top of the bag and suspend it on glass rod laid across your 400ml beaker containing
distilled water, such that the levels of the fluids inside and outside are the same
3. After 30 minutes, test a few ml. of water in the beaker with a few drops of silver nitrate solution.
Result:____________________________________________________
4. Test another portion of the water in the beaker with a few drops of iodine solution.
Result: __________________________________________________________
After
1. Dispose all waste materials into the laboratory waste bin. Observe proper segregation of hazardous and non-
hazardous chemicals in discarding them into the waste bin.
2. Clean all your laboratory apparatus and return them to the laboratory custodian or technician.
3. Clean your working area and sink.
4. Make sure to unplug all electronic devices used in the operation.
