Tutorial-3
πt
Q. 1 Pre-Tutorial Problem : Prove that the Hilbert Transform of sinc(t) = sin 2 sinc 2t .
Q. 2 The output signal from an AM modulator is
u(t) = 5 cos(1800πt) + 20 cos(2000πt) + 5 cos(2200πt)
(a) Determine the modulating signal m(t) and the carrier signal c(t).
(b) Determine the Modulation Index.
(c) Determine the ratio of the power in the sidebands to the power in the carrier and also the
efficiency.
Q 3. Show that the Hilbert Transform of a real and even signal is (real and odd) and the Hilbert
Transform of a real and odd signal is (real and even).
Q. 4 A low pass signal x(t) has a Fourier Transform as shown in Figure 1 below. This signal
is applied to the system shown in Figure 2. The blocks marked by (H ) represent Hilbert
Transform blocks and it is assumed that f0 >> W. Determine the signals xi (t) for 1 ≤ i ≤ 7
and plot Xi ( f ) for 1 ≤ i ≤ 7.

Q 5. Let m(t) = sinc2 (t) and let x(t) = m(t) cos(2πf0 t) - m̂(t) sin(2πf0 t) represent a bandpass
signal.
(a) Find the pre-envelope x p (t) corresponding to x(t).
(b) Also, find x̃(t), the lowpass equivalent to x(t).
