Socratic Question Approach
Questions of Clarification What is the *presenters main point? What examples does the presenter give to illustrate? Is this the presenters own idea or information or from some other source? Does the presenter summarize the main points, or can I summarize them? Questions that Probe Assumptions What assumptions does the presenter make? Are those assumptions supported by facts or evidence and how? Questions that Probe Reasons and Evidence What evidence does the presenter cite? Could the evidence indicate an equally plausible conclusion? Is the presenters conclusion the only appropriate one for the reasons and evidence cited? Questions that Probe Implications and Consequences What effects could or would result from the presenters conclusions? What else could be generalized from the presenters observation? What other things come to mind for the reader as a result of the presenters conclusion? What might happen as a result?
(*) The presenter could refer to the author of the text or it could refer to the ideas presented by a cited source or the response of another reader.
