Let’s Think About It!
a. What do you think is the main function of our atmosphere?
- The atmosphere of Earth is the layer of gases, commonly known as air, retained
by Earth's gravity, surrounding the planet Earth and forming its planetary atmosphere.
The atmosphere of Earth protects life on Earth by creating pressure allowing for liquid
water to exist on the Earth's surface, absorbing ultraviolet solar radiation, warming the
surface through heat retention (greenhouse effect), and reducing temperature extremes
between day and night (the diurnal temperature variation).
b. Do you think it’s possible for one sphere to be independent of the others?
- Four spheres are all independent parts of a system. The spheres interact with
each other, and a change in one area can cause a change in another. The biosphere
contains all the planet's living things.
c. How do these spheres interact with one another?
- Interactions also occur among the spheres. For example, a change
in the atmosphere can cause a change in the hydrosphere, and vice versa. Humans
(biosphere) harness energy from the water (hydrosphere) by having it spin turbines
(lithosphere) to produce electricity.
