11-HUMSS Understanding Culture, Society, and Politics
Instruction: All of us have experienced the super typhoon Odette, and based on your
experience I want you to answer the following questions:
1. What culture do we have that made us different from others when we experience
calamities such as the super typhoon Odette?
Filipinos are distinguish for their indomitable and optimistic spirits that goes far beyond any
empediments and hopeful that everything shall pass soon in time. During the worse times love
and laughter is our most potent weapon albeit we already lost everything, long as our family is
alive and safe succumbing to despair is never an option. These are just traits that filipinos have
grown out and long possessed throughout the history and served as part of our culture.
2. Have you noticed any social changes after the typhoon? Support your answer.
Yes. People are now triving to survival alone and carries not on their usual long term goal but
now solely for a daily basis, especially for place of shelter and a reliable food source.
Communication to neighbors can be highly observed in every communities compared to the life
after the implementation of the new normal e.g. those who works from home experienced a
disruption to their virtual regular schedules, resulting to more physical interactions here and
there; kids minimising their screen time and plays with other kids in the neighborhood; while
boredom urges us to be creative and resort to art and other healthy pastime rather than browsing
facebook or pludge all day to to online games.
3. What can you say to the actions made (before and/or after) by our government?
The lack of readiness cause by a deficient amount of information given to the public supposedly
from the government or from higher authority about the intensity of the typhoon greatly
manifested a predetermined negative outcome on the aftermath of Odette. Everyone speaks of
“ We never expected it to be that fatal and disastrous. Well, maybe we’re just carelessly relaying
on our past experience of Yolanda and others few years past. Alert level 5 was nothing but a
typical moderate wind and drizzles back then.” Now, theres no undo button but to face the
calamitous predicament cause by Odette but so far everyone is in full force in restoring the
community back, including the government and those that work in the field who has all the
arduous task in providing a normal living to the people.
