Activity 1:

[Link] story happened in a hospital during the chechnyan war.

[Link] main character in the story is Sonja and Ahkmed. Sonja is a dynamic
character wherein she underwent a change in disposition in life due to the passing of her sister. Ahkmed is a
determined father and, a dynamic character as shown in the end the story wherein he was saddened by the
realities happening in the hospital.

1. The story is about punishment that has to deal with rope and the Japanese culture is tackled in the story.

2. Onigiri may be wrapped with seaweed and could be like a sandwich from the West. Onigiri is a rice ball, is a
Japanese food made from white rice formed into triangular or cylindrical shapes and often wrapped in nori
(seaweed).

3. The main characters in the story were Jiro and Kazuya.

4. “E tadaki mas,” my uncle said. Jiro picked up onigiri, a rice ball, with his hands and mashed it into his
mouth. The one telling the story was the narrator or sibling of Jiro.

5. The sheminawa is from Japan where it’s a tradition and part of Japanese culture as well as the way they eat
food. They eat it with respect just like how they eat onigiri.

6. Asia is known for having close family ties. The family tradition being presented in the story was
sheminawa, the rope tied a shrine space, or across its entrances, to mark its sacred nature.
7. The story shared a specific culture in the country. The culture shared was the respect of eating food.

8. In the story, Jiro was not eating properly, so Kazuya stood up and roughly pulled Jiro. Kazuya use force in
disciplining Jiro and Kazuya tied Jiro by the oak tree.

9. So, Jiro would eat properly and respect the food. It also teaches him to be a man.

10. Jiro eats whatever he has on his plate and stops wasting food.

Activity 4: Critical Analysis of the Poem

I. Background Information
-Author of poem “Equality”, Maya Angelou, is an American poet, a civil rights activist, and an award-winning
author of her acclaimed memoir, “I know Why the Caged Birds Sing”.

3. Purpose of the poem. Provide evidence, extract lines from the poem

- The purpose of the poem is to convey the authors feeling of how everyone should be treated with
equal respect.

*The lines “Equality, and I will be free” was repeated 6 times throughout the whole poem.

4. Theme of the poem

- In the poem, the author tries to address the importance of equality and freedom without segregation,
discrimination, and racism.

II. Summary- Write the issues being raised in the poem

- About how some people lack and act indifferently to things such as treating others equally. Others act as
if this is a trivial matter, it’s not, from as far as I can recall there was never a time where I believed that
everyone in the world was equal. The fact of the matter is, there is no equality, just discrimination and
racism.

III. Interpretation and Evaluation

A. Discuss the style of the author in presenting the issues

- The author conveys her message in a way that captivates the readers, to be able to enable them into
visualizing her words into images. With the use of metaphors, imagery, and repetition.

B. Discuss if the was author successful in persuading the audience regarding the issues.

- Because of the author’s simplistic but alluring way of expressing herself into the poem, it is safe to say
that the message she was trying to convey got through her readers. She was able to make use of the
words to make a message about the discrimination and racism around the world in which had clearly
pierced the hearts of many.

IV. Reflection: How the issues presented affect you?

- The issue in the poem gave me insight just how bad this problem is for everyone. Nevertheless, it made
me happy to think that we are still good people around the world, that strive for this kind of life. A life
where everyone is equal and free.

2. I learned that scanning is trying to find a particular word/phrases in a book etc.

3. I learned that teachers usually encourage extensive reading to their students to help them develop their
vocabulary.
