GSM Home Automation System Overview

1. The document describes a GSM-based home automation system that allows controlling home appliances and devices remotely using SMS messages sent via a GSM modem connected to a microcontroller. 2. The system was created to address safety issues like fires when the homeowner is away and allow remote monitoring of the home for security purposes. 3. The key components include a microcontroller, GSM modem, sensors for fire and light, relays to control devices, and an LCD interface powered by a 5V supply. SMS messages act as control signals between the mobile phone and microcontroller via the GSM modem.

Aim:

To facilitate home automation i.e. control of various home appliances and electronic devices using Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) technology.

Motivation and Purpose:

Consider the following scenario or events which may occur while the owner is not at his home: 1. If the boiler or electric heater is left on which may lead to fire 2. Robbery or access to home by unauthorized persons 3. Loss of electricity and money due to the electric devices which are left open like fans, lights. Solution: The above unwanted situations may be checked and taken care of if a way is Implemented to monitor the home, even if the owner is physically absent from its premises. This can be achieved using GSM technology. Hence the main purpose of this project is to

ensure security with convenience in home (or office) without the necessity of the owner himself. the Communication through SMS (short message service), which act as control signals to the various devices. Here, we are using a GSM modem to interface the microcontroller (control device) with GSM device (mobile). The block diagram and components are given below:

The fire sensor and LDR are used to detect fire and light. ULN 2003 is used for driving currents (buffer) for showing status etc. Other components have their usual applications. and LCD is used as an interface between user and circuit

Applications and Future Prospects:

The above prototype will ensure efficiency in home automation and other advantages like saving of time and money. Some of its future applications may be achieved by adding a camera so as to monitor by actually viewing the place. Also, GSM technology may also be enhanced to control more advanced electronic devices like Robots(fire, metal detecting etc.)
