● Recommended height: 1.5 m above the floor.
● Do not mount the devices in recesses, shelves, behind curtains or doors, or above or
near heat sources.
● Avoid direct solar radiation and drafts.
● Avoid unheated (uncooled) building area such as outside walls.
● Seal the conduit box or the installation tube if any, as air currents can affect sensor read-
ings.
● Adhere to allowed ambient conditions.
● An external room temperature sensor is recommended if above situations cannot be
avoided in the installation area.
A mounting plate is provided to fit onto a square conduit box with 60.3 mm fixing centers. A
conduit box of at least 50 mm in depth to accommodate all wire connections is recommend-
ed.
After installing the mounting plate, wire all terminals of the unit. Secure the unit to the mount-
ing plate as described in the installation and operating instructions (Document ID:
A6V12101243) enclosed with the unit.

WARNING
Commissioning
After power-up, all LCD segments light up for about 3 seconds. Afterwards, the VRF HMI
unit starts in Normal mode to display the current room temperature, user navigation icons
and status of the application according to the factory settings. Then the unit is ready for
commissioning by qualified HVAC staff.
The control parameters of unit can be adjusted to ensure optimum performance of the entire
system (see Control parameters [▶ 6]).
Sensor calibration
The unit has an internal sensor for accurate temperature display. If the temperature display
is influenced by its installation location, calibrate the sensor via parameter P05 to adjust the
readings.
Sensor error
“Er1” is displayed when the internal sensor does not work properly.
TOUCH IC error
“Er2” is displayed upon an error in the internal TOUCH IC.

VRF error
The error codes are displayed upon errors in the VRF indoor unit. For indoor unit error
codes, see Control parameters [▶ 7].
Control parameters
Parameter settings
To optimize control performance, use the local HMI to enter parameter mode and adjust a
number of control parameters. All control parameter settings are retained after power failure.

Operation
Display
The display shows the current room temperature via the built-in sensor of the VRF HMI unit
(factory setting). Alternatively, temperature setpoint or temperature value from VRF indoor
unit can be used for the display (P06)

For VRF mode, indicates Auto VRF mode, indicates cooling, indicates heating,
indicates ventilation and indicates dehumidification.
Keylock
Keylock can be activated or deactivated via parameter P14 (see Control parameters [▶ 6])
when the unit is in ON and OFF mode.
Operating modes
The following operating modes are available:
Normal mode
In Normal mode (ON), the VRF HMI unit displays the room temperature value, available user
selection and status of the VRF indoor unit.
To save energy, the minimum (P09) and maximum (P10) setpoint can be set for limiting the
available setpoint range.
OFF mode
In OFF mode, VRF indoor unit is turned off.
ECO mode
When ECO mode is selected, the VRF outdoor unit runs in an energy saving mode. Only
one VRF HMI unit can be set as master unit or a master controller is used to select ECO
mode.

● 1-to-n Modbus/VRF gateway with Modbus master function or an additional Modbus mas-
ter unit
The Modbus master manages communication between VRF HMI units (slave function) and
the Modbus gateway to ensure proper operation. When using a Modbus gateway without
Modbus master function, an additional Modbus master unit is required.
Note RDF280 does not have termination resistor.

Cyber security disclaimer
Siemens provides a portfolio of products, solutions, systems and services that includes secu-
rity functions that support the secure operation of plants, systems, machines and networks.
In the field of Building Technologies, this includes building automation and control, fire safe-
ty, security management as well as physical security systems. In order to protect plants, sys-
tems, machines and networks against cyber threats, it is necessary to implement – and con-
tinuously maintain – a holistic, state-of-the-art security concept. Siemens’ portfolio only forms
one element of such a concept.
You are responsible for preventing unauthorized access to your plants, systems, machines
and networks which should only be connected to an enterprise network or the internet if and
to the extent such a connection is necessary and only when appropriate security measures
(e.g. firewalls and/or network segmentation) are in place. Additionally, Siemens’ guidance on
appropriate security measures should be taken into account. For additional information,

Siemens’ portfolio undergoes continuous development to make it more secure. Siemens
strongly recommends that updates are applied as soon as they are available and that the
latest versions are used. Use of versions that are no longer supported, and failure to apply
the latest updates may increase your exposure to cyber threats. Siemens strongly recom-
mends to comply with security advisories on the latest security threats, patches and other re-
lated measures, published, among others, under [Link]
