ABSTRACT
Even in this modern era women are feeling insecure to step out of their house because
of increasing crimes in our country like harassment, abuse, violence etc., The corporate
and IT sector are currently in boom. Many women are working in corporate even in night
shifts. There is a feeling of insecurity among the working women. The proposed device
is more like a safety system in case of emergency. This device can be fitted in a jacket
(similar to a blazer for women). It is an easy to carry device with more features and
functions. The emergency push button is held to one of the buttons of the jacket. The
main purpose of this device is to intimate the parents and police about the current
location of the women. A GPS system is used to trace the current position of the victim
and a GSM modem is used to send the message to the pre-defined numbers. There are
several applications that reduce the risk of sexual abuse by sending SMS but in our
model we also provide an audio circuit which is more useful for physically challenged
people. We found an ALL-IN-ONE security device which has all the features in one
click.

1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 OBJECTIVE:
Security is the condition of being protected against danger or loss. In the general sense,
security is a concept similar to safety. The nuance between the two is an added
emphasis on being protected from dangers that originate from outside. Individuals or
actions that encroach upon the condition of protection are responsible for the breach of
security. The word "security" in general usage is synonymous with "safety," but as a
technical term "security" means that something not only is secure but that it has been
secured.
The arduino uno acts as an embedded computing system and controls the activities of
all the subsystems. It is interfaced with Emergency Switch, GPS Receiver, GSM
MODEM, and Speech Circuit. In case of emergency the trigger button is pressed.
The system tracks the location information from the GPS and prepares a text SMS
containing the present location information and send SMS through GSM modem to the
police control room and distress message to the pre programmed mobile number. Using
the information supplied by this system, the location using GPS and can be traced
through Google maps. Thus the girl will be safe and she feels protected. This project
uses regulated 5V, 750mA power supply. Bridge type full wave rectifier is used to rectify
the ac output of secondary of 230/12V step down transformer.

1.2 INTRODUCTION TO EMBEDDED SYSTEMS
The arduino-based system is built for controlling a function or range of functions and is
not designed to be programmed by the end user in the same way a PC is defined as an
embedded system. An embedded system is designed to perform one particular task
albeit with different choices and options.
Embedded systems contain processing cores that are either microcontrollers or digital
signal processors. Microcontrollers are generally known as "chip", which may itself be
packaged with other microcontrollers in a hybrid system of Application Specific
Integrated Circuit (ASIC).
In general, input always comes from a detector or sensors in more specific word and
meanwhile the output goes to the activator which may start or stop the operation of the
machine or the operating system. An embedded system is a combination of both
hardware and software, each embedded system is unique and the hardware is highly
specialized in the application domain. Hardware consists of processors, microcontroller,
IR sensors etc.
On the other hand, Software is just like a brain of the whole embedded system as this
consists of the programming languages used which makes hardware work.
As a result, embedded systems programming can be a widely varying experience.
Embedded systems that are programmable are provided with a programming interface,
and embedded systems programming id specialized occupation.

Figure 1.1 Block diagram of embedded system
Figure 1.1 illustrate the Block diagram of Embedded System (ES consists of hardware
and software part which again consists of programming language and physical
peripherals respectively).
On the other hand, the microcontroller is a single silicon chip consisting of all input,
output and peripherals on it.
A single microcontroller has the following features:
1. Arithmetic and logic unit
2. Memory for storing program
3. EEPROM for nonvolatile and special function registers
4. Input/output ports
5. Analog to digital converter
6. Circuits
7. Serial communication ports

United States’ Navstar GPS, 24 main satellites in 6 orbits circle the Earth every 12
hours. In addition, Russia maintains a constellation called GLONASS (Global
Navigation Satellite System).
LM 2596 BUCK CONVERTER
A buck converter (step-down converter) is a DC-to-DC power converter which steps
down voltage (while stepping up current) from its input (supply) to its output (load). To
reduce voltage ripple, filters made of capacitors (sometimes in combination with
inductors) are normally added to such a converter's output (load-side filter) and input
(supply-side filter)

3.2 GPS TECHNOLOGY
3.2.1 Definition of GPS
It is a GPS navigation GPS receiver module piece of hardware that you add to other
piece of hardware (e.g. car head unit, Raspberry PI, Arduino even your computer) to
give it the possibility to receive information from GPS satellites.
3.2.2 GPS Operations
GPS satellites circle the Earth twice a day in a precise orbit. Each satellite
transmits a unique signal and orbital parameters that allow GPS devices to
decode and compute the precise location of the satellite. GPS receivers use this
information and trilateration to calculate a user's exact position.
Once your position has been determined, the GPS unit can calculate other
information, such as:
Speed
Bearing
Track
Trip dist
Distance to destination
15
Connection of GPS module to Arduino:-
Ublox - Arduino
GND - GND
TX - Digital pin (D3)
RX - Digital pin (D4)
Vcc - 3.3 V
3.2.3 Advantages of GPS
The GPS signal is available anywhere on the globe. Hence user will not deprive of GPS
facility anywhere.
There is no charge to utilize the GPS service as US Defence bears cost of GPS
system. It is maintained and upgraded by US Department of Defence. It is
cheaper compare to other navigational systems.
The GPS system gets calibrated by its own and hence it is easy to be used by
anyone.
It provides user with location based information.
3.2.4 GPS Applications
The free global availability and accuracy of GPS signals for positioning and timing,
combined with the low cost of receiver chipsets, has made GPS the preferred solution
for a very wide and growing range of civilian applications.
Road Transport
Aviation
Shipping and Rail Transport
Security
Telecommunications
Surveying, Mapping and Geophysics
16
3.2.5 Future of GPS
With the reduction of equipment costs and the complete satellite coverage, many more
applications will develop. This includes terrestrial, marine, and aviation applications.
There will be also numerous applications in survey and geodesy as well as precise time
determination and time transfer. One land application which has been mentioned is the
use of GPS to automate various types of machinery. For example, it should be possible
to automate the grading and paving equipment used for road building. Equipment could
be run around the clock without operators with GPS performing all motion operations
based upon a digital terrain model stored in the computer of the equipment. Marine
applications will include vessel navigation and information systems, precise harbor
entrance systems, and oceanography in general. For aviation, GPS will be integrated
into other navigation systems like INS to fulfill the high reliability and integrity
requirements. Applications will include en route navigation and surveillance, approach
and landing, collision avoidance, and proximity warning. Aircraft could be operated in an
automated mode with takeoffs and landings being performed by integrating GPS and
computer units. The use of GPS will increasingly be extended to space for precise
positioning of (e.g., earth remote sensing) satellites, for attitude determination of
spacecraft, and for missile navigation, cf. for example McDonald (1991) and Exon
(1993).

4.1.5 Pin Explanation
[Link]. VCC
Digital supply voltage.
[Link]. GND

[Link]. Port B (PB[7:0])
Port B is an 8-bit bi-directional I/O port with internal pull-up resistors (selected for each bit). The
Port B output buffers have symmetrical drive characteristics with both high sink and source
capability. As inputs, Port B pins that are externally pulled low will source current if the pull-up
resistors are activated. The Port B pins are tri-stated when a reset condition becomes active,
even if the clock is not running.
[Link]. Port C (PC[5:0])
Port C is a 7-bit bi-directional I/O port with internal pull-up resistors (selected for each bit). The
PC[5:0] output buffers have symmetrical drive characteristics with both high sink and source
capability. As inputs, Port C pins that are externally pulled low will source current if the pull-up
resistors are activated. The Port C pins are tri-stated when a reset condition becomes active,
even if the clock is not running.
[Link]. PC6/RESET
If the RSTDISBL Fuse is programmed, PC6 is used as an I/O pin. Note that the electrical
characteristics of PC6 differ from those of the other pins of Port C.
[Link]. Port D (PD[7:0])
Port D is an 8-bit bi-directional I/O port with internal pull-up resistors (selected for each bit). The
Port D output buffers have symmetrical drive characteristics with both high sink and source
capability. The Port D pins are tri-stated when a reset condition becomes active, even if the
clock is not running.
[Link]. AVCC
AVCC is the supply voltage pin for the A/D Converter, PC[3:0], and PE[3:2]. It should be
externally connected to VCC, even if the ADC is not used. If the ADC is used, it should be
connected to VCC through a low-pass filter. Note that PC[6:4] use digital supply voltage, VCC.
[Link]. AREF
AREF is the analog reference pin for the A/D Converter.
[Link]. ADC[7:6] (TQFP and VFQFN Package Only)
In the TQFP and VFQFN package, ADC[7:6] serve as analog inputs to the A/D converter. These
pins are powered from the analog supply and serve as 10-bit ADC channels.
21
4.2 Arduino Uno Borad Description
We will learn about the different components on the Arduino board. We will study the Arduino
UNO board because it is the most popular board in the Arduino board family. In addition, it is the
best board to get started with electronics and coding. Some boards look a bit different from the
one given below, but most Arduinos have majority of these components in common.
4.2.1 Power USB
Arduino board can be powered by using the USB cable from computer. All we need to
do is connect the USB cable to the USB connection (1).
4.2.2 Power (Barrel Jack)
Arduino boards can be powered directly from the AC mains power supply by connecting
it to the Barrel Jack (2).
4.2.3 Voltage Regulator
The function of the voltage regulator is to control the voltage given to the Arduino board
and stabilize the DC voltages used by the processor and other elements.
22
4.2.4 Crystal Oscillator
The crystal oscillator helps Arduino in dealing with time issues. How does Arduino
calculate time? The answer is, by using the crystal oscillator. The number printed on top
of the Arduino crystal is 16.000H9H. It tells us that the frequency is 16,000,000 Hertz or
16 MHz.
4.2.5 Arduino Reset
We can reset wer Arduino board, i.e., start wer program from the beginning. We can
reset the UNO board in two ways. First, by using the reset button (17) on the board.
Second, we can connect an external reset button to the Arduino pin labelled RESET (5).
4.2.6 Pins (3.3, 5, GND, Vin)
3.3V (6) − Supply 3.3 output volt
5V (7) − Supply 5 output volt
Most of the components used with Arduino board works fine with 3.3 volt
and 5 volt.
GND (8)(Ground) − There are several GND pins on the Arduino, any of
which can be used to ground wer circuit.
Vin (9) − This pin also can be used to power the Arduino board from an
external power source, like AC mains power supply.
4.2.7 Analog pins
The Arduino UNO board has five analog input pins A0 through A5. These pins can read
the signal from an analog sensor like the humidity sensor or temperature sensor and
convert it into a digital value that can be read by the microprocessor.
23
4.3 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY (16 X 2 )
The Alphanumeric LCD for Arduino using only one component the LCD, we can
povide our Arduino board with at least a 16×2 alphanumeric LCD display. This project
consumes only three I/O pins, no matter what we decide to use, connected to a Shift
Register. An alphanumeric LCD added to Arduino as a stable add-on devices is very
useful during the debug phase of the sketches and gives much more options to our
project.
The shift register is an easy-to-manage component. There are two types of shift
registers: shift-in and shift-out parallel registers.
shift-in means that all the 8 bits (corresponding to 8 pins) can be set together and
serially read from the input data pin.
shift-out is the opposite. We can send 8 bits serially to the output data pin shifted
to the parallel 8-bits of the output pins.
Regardless of the type of shift-register we are using, we need only three pins in our
microcontroller. One pin is used for the serial data and the other two act like a clock to
notify to the shift-register when a bit is ready to be shifted (shift-out) or the
microcontroller is ready to acquire a new bit for reading (shift-in).
Another important aspect is the name of the component: register. In the assembler
language a register is usually a place where a series of bits are stored for special
24
purpose. In fact, the shift-registers not only are able to shift in one direction a certain
number of bits but the bit status of every pin is persistent until another byte has not
been completely sent (or received).
