PRIME AND COMPOSITE NUMBERS
PRIME NUMBERS- The numbers having exactly two factors – 1 and
itself are called PRIME NUMBERS.
Eg: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13…………………
2 is the only even number which is a PRIME NUMBER
COMPOSITE NUMBERS – The numbers having more than two factors
are called Composite numbers.
For eg:4, 6, 8, 10, 12, …………………………

TWIN PRIMES- Two prime numbers are said to be twin primes if their
difference is 2. For eg: (3, 5), (5, 7), (11,13)…………..
CO-PRIME- Two numbers are said to be co-prime if they do not have a
common factor other than 1.
For eg: (2,3), (3, 4), (4, 5) are pairs of co- prime numbers
TWO CONSECUTIVE NUMBERS ARE ALWAYS CO-PRIME
PERFECT NUMBERS- If the sum of all the factors of a number is double
that number, then that number is called a perfect number.

SOME MORE DIVISIBILITY RULES
RULE 1- If a number is divisible by another number, then the first
number is divisible by every factor of the second number.
For eg:- 84 is divisible by 12.
The factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
Therefore 84 is divisible by the factors of 12.
36 is divisible by 6- 1,2,3,6

RULE 2- If a number is divisible by two or more co-prime numbers,

it must be divisible by their product also.
For eg:- 72 is divisible by 4 and 9 both.
4 and 9 are co-prime numbers.
Therefore, 72 is divisible by the product of 4 and 9 also i.e 36.

RULE 3- If a number is a factor of two or more numbers then, it is a

factor of their sum/ difference also.
For e.g.- 8 is a factor of 40 and 48 both
Therefore, 8 is a factor of (40 + 48=88) also.
16 is a factor of 32 and 80
Therefore, 16 is a factor of (80 – 32= 48) also

Common questions

The divisibility rule for 11 involves subtracting the sum of the digits at odd positions from the sum of the digits at even positions. For 70169308, the sum of digits at odd positions (0 + 6 + 3 + 8) is 17 and the sum at even positions (7 + 1 + 9 + 9) is 26. The difference 26 - 17 is 9, however, if recalculated as described in the source, errors might have occurred in position consideration, demonstrating conceptual difficulties .

The divisibility rule for 11 states that a number is divisible by 11 if the absolute difference between the sums of its digits at odd and even positions is zero or a multiple of 11. This rule uses properties of alternating series and modular arithmetic .

The sum of two odd numbers is always even because an odd number can be expressed in the form of (2n + 1), where n is an integer. Adding two odd numbers results in: (2n + 1) + (2m + 1) = 2(n + m + 1), which is evidently an even number as it can be divided by 2 .

Prime factorization breaks numbers into their constituent primes. For LCM, the highest powers of all prime factors are used, whereas for GCF, the lowest power common to all numbers involved is used as demonstrated by calculating LCM and GCF for numbers like 48 and 60 using their prime factors .

A number is divisible by 4 if the last two digits form a number that is divisible by 4. For 726352, the last two digits are 52, which is divisible by 4. A number is divisible by 8 if the last three digits form a number that is divisible by 8. The last three digits (352) of 726352 are divisible by 8. Hence, 726352 is divisible by both 4 and 8 .

Yes, among any three consecutive numbers, one will be even (ensuring divisibility by 2) and one will be a multiple of three, ensuring divisibility by 3. Hence, their product is divisible by 6 as seen in examples such as 2x3x4 = 24 and 4x5x6 = 120 .

The greatest common factor of two consecutive numbers is always 1 because such numbers do not share any prime factors due to how they are spaced apart by exactly one unit, ensuring no divisibility except for 1 .

A number is considered a perfect number when the sum of its factors equals twice the number itself. For the number 6, its factors are 1, 2, 3, and 6. The sum of these factors is 12, which is exactly double of 6 .

The principle of co-prime numbers states if a number is divisible by each of two or more co-prime numbers, it is divisible by their product. This logical extension aids in solving divisibility problems and is exemplified by deriving that a number divisible by 5 and 12 must be divisible by 60 .

Rule 2 states that if a number is divisible by two or more coprime numbers, it is divisible by their product. This deepens our understanding of divisibility by allowing us to simplify complex divisibility problems through coprime components, as illustrated by the number 72, divisible by both 4 and 9, hence by their product, 36 .
