Ksp Calculations for Silver Compounds

This document provides instructions for determining the Ksp values of various solids. Students are asked to calculate the Ksp of silver chloride, strontium sulfate, silver carbonate, and strontium iodate based on molar concentration data from a virtual lab experiment. They then answer exercises involving writing Ksp expressions, calculating Ksp from solubility data, and determining ion concentrations in a saturated solution using the known Ksp value.

DATA AND RESULTS
1. Write the chemical equilibrium equation for the dissociation of the following solids and the
corresponding Ksp expression.:

Solid Chemical Equilibrium Equation Ksp Expression

Silver chloride AgCl(s) ⇌ Ag+(aq)+Cl-(aq)  Ksp= [Ag+] [ Cl-]

Strontium sulfate SrSO4(s) ⇌ Sr2+(aq) + SO42−(aq)  Ksp= [ Sr2+] [ SO42−]

Silver carbonate Ag2CO3(s) ⇌ Ag+(S) + CO3-2 (aq)  Ksp= [Ag+] [CO3-2]

Strontium iodate Sr (IO3)2 (s) + H2O(l) ⇌ Sr2+(aq) + 2IO3 - (aq)  Ksp= [Sr2+] [IO3]2

2. Calculate the Ksp of the given solids (Use information from the Virtual Lab)

Salt Molar Concentrations Ksp

[Ag+] = 1.33x10-5
Ksp = [Ag+][Cl-]
Silver chloride Ksp = (1.33x10-5) (1.33x10-5)
[Cl ] = 1.33x10
- -5

Ksp = 1.77 x10-10

[SO4-2] = 5.84 x 10-4

Ksp = [SO4-2] [Sr+2]
Strontium sulfate [Sr+2] = 5.84 x 10-4 Ksp = (5.84 x 10-4) (5.84x10-4)
Ksp = 3.41 x10-7

[Ag+] = 2.56 x 10-4

Ksp = [Ag+] [CO3-2]
Silver carbonate Ksp = (2.56 x 10-4) (1.28 x 10-4)
[CO3 ] = 1.28 x10
-2 -4

Ksp = 3.28 x 10-3

[Sr+2] = 4.39 x 10-3

Ksp = [Sr+2] [IO3-]2
Strontium iodate [IO3-] = 8.79 x 10-3 Ksp = (4.39 x 10-3) (8.79 x 10-3)2
Ksp = 3.39 x 10-7

Discussion/Interpretation of Data/Results

EXERCISES
1. Write the Ksp expression of the following salts: Mg(OH) 2; Cu(IO3)2; Ag2CrO4 and look for the
accepted Ksp value for each.
a. Mg(OH)2

Dissociation: Mg(OH)2(s) ↔ Mg2+ (aq) + 2OH- (aq)

Ksp = [Mg+2][OH-]2
Accepted Ksp value of Mg(OH)2 =1.8 × 10-11

b. Cu(IO3)2

Dissociation: Cu(IO3)2 ↔ Cu+2 (aq) + 2 IO3- (aq)

Ksp = [Cu+2][IO3-]2
Accepted Ksp value of Cu(IO3)2 = 6.47 × 10-6

c. Ag2CrO4

Dissociation: Ag2CrO4(s) ↔ 2 Ag+ (aq) + CrO42- (aq)

Ksp = [Ag+]2[CrO42-]
Accepted Ksp value of Ag2CrO4 = 1.12 × 10-12

2. The solubility of lead (II) fluoride is found experimentally to be 0.533 g/L. Calculate the Ksp for
lead (II) fluoride. (Molar Mass = 245.20 g/mol)
Given:
solubility of PbF2 = 0.533 g/L
molar mass = 245.20 g/mol
Ksp of PbF2 = ?
−¿ (aq ) K sp=¿¿
2+¿ ( aq ) +2 F ¿
Pb F 2 ( s ) ⇆ Pb

Solution:
0.533 g 1 mol
× =2.17 ×10−3 M
L 245.20 g

K sp =( 2.17 ×10 ) ( 4.35 ×10 ) =4.11 ×10

−3 −3 −8

−8
K sp =4.11 ×10
3. Using the accepted value for the Ksp of AgCl at 25oC, calculate the concentration in mole per
liter of Ag+ in a saturated solution of the salt.
Dissociation: AgCl(s)  Ag(aq) + +_ Cl(aq) –
Ksp= [Ag+][Cl-]
Accepted Ksp value: 1.8 x 10-10
1.8 x 10-10 = [Ag+][Cl-]
1.8 x 10-10 = (x) (x)
1.8 x 10-10 = x2

X √ 1.8 x 10
−10

[Ag+][Cl-] x =1.34 x 10-5 M

[Ag+] = x = 1.34 x 10-5 M
