Should Zoos Be Closed for Animal Welfare?

The document argues that zoos should be closed because animals in captivity show distressed behavior and lack abilities they have in the wild. It states animals should not be captured and jailed, even if endangered, as they suffer from stress, boredom and depression in zoos with limited space. While some argue zoos provide family entertainment, the document counters that keeping animals captive is cruel as they may die from poor living conditions unlike in their natural habitat.

TOPIC: Should all zoos eventually be closed?

Zoos may seem fun to visit and exciting to see the animals; but what you don’t see is the suffering and
depression that lies in these helpless creatures. Many people assume that zoos are horrible. I strongly
believe that zoos should be closed, and it is better to see animals in the wild than in zoos because all
animals should be left to live freely in their own environment.

Firstly, animals in captivity show distraught behavior and don’t have the same abilities as those in the
wild. For example, in the article The Loneliest Elephant written by Tracy Tullis, it states, “With limited
space and no infants to care for, captive elephants can become catatonically bored.

Another reason is humans do not have the right to capture animals, tear them from their families, and
jail them, even if the animal is endangered. In my own experience I have seen many animals are abused,
not given enough space and exercise, and they suffer from stress, boredom, and depression.

Some people might argue that visiting a zoo is a family activity, and it provides wholesome
entertainment and happy memories for the whole family.

However, that’s not the point. If someone goes into your house, kidnaps you, tears you from your
family, and jails you for life, how would you feel if that were you? Many animals die because of a bad
diet, not enough exercise, and bad living conditions.

In conclusion, animals should be protected but this does not have to be in zoos. Zoos are cruel to
animals, not similar enough to their natural habitat, and they should be closed down.
