Basic Electronics Components & Symbols

This document discusses basic electronics components and circuits. It describes two types of electrical current: alternating current (AC), which travels at 60Hz in the US, and direct current (DC), which travels at 120Hz. A closed circuit allows electricity to flow, while an open circuit prevents flow. Components include resistors, capacitors, diodes, fuses, transistors, integrated circuits, potentiometers, and switches. Series circuits require one component to power the next in sequence, while parallel circuits connect all components between common points.

Electrical currents

There are 2 types of electrical signals,

● Alternating current, or AC, which travels at 60hz , this is used in the US, goes both ways,
(Tesla)
● Direct current, or DC, which travels at 120 hz, goes directly to a circuit, Generates a lot of
heat (Edison)
● In DC red is positive and green, or black, is negative
Circuits

● A Closed circuit is a complete

circuit shows that has continuity
and will allow the flow of electricity
● An Open circuit is a not complete
circuit and will not allow the flow of
electricity
● You can tell whether the circuit is
open or closed with a multimeter
Series Circuit

Requires one object to be powered in order for the next component

to be powered.

This means that everything in a circuit comes one after the other, in a
series
Parallel Circuit

a parallel circuit is defined as one where all components are

connected between the same set of electrically common points.
Basic components
Resistors-adds resistance and reduces electrical current, measured in Ohms, looks like a zig zag

Capacitor-device for storing electrical energy, consisting of two conductors in close proximity and
insulated from each other

Diode- a semiconductor device that essentially acts as a one-way switch for current. The most common
type of diode is an LED

Fuse-an electrical safety device that operates to provide overcurrent protection of an electrical circuit.

Transistor-a semiconductor device with three connections, capable of amplification in addition to

rectification.

Integrated Circuit-an electronic circuit formed on a small piece of semiconducting material, performing
the same function as a larger circuit made from discrete components.

potentiometer-a three-terminal resistor with a sliding or rotating contact that forms an adjustable
voltage divider

Switch-Turns something on or off
