Electrical currents
There are 2 types of electrical signals,
● Alternating current, or AC, which travels at 60hz , this is used in the US, goes both ways,
(Tesla)
● Direct current, or DC, which travels at 120 hz, goes directly to a circuit, Generates a lot of
heat (Edison)
● In DC red is positive and green, or black, is negative
Circuits
● A Closed circuit is a complete
circuit shows that has continuity
and will allow the flow of electricity
● An Open circuit is a not complete
circuit and will not allow the flow of
electricity
● You can tell whether the circuit is
open or closed with a multimeter
Series Circuit
Requires one object to be powered in order for the next component
to be powered.
This means that everything in a circuit comes one after the other, in a
series
Parallel Circuit
a parallel circuit is defined as one where all components are
connected between the same set of electrically common points.
Basic components
Resistors-adds resistance and reduces electrical current, measured in Ohms, looks like a zig zag
Capacitor-device for storing electrical energy, consisting of two conductors in close proximity and
insulated from each other
Diode- a semiconductor device that essentially acts as a one-way switch for current. The most common
type of diode is an LED
Fuse-an electrical safety device that operates to provide overcurrent protection of an electrical circuit.
Transistor-a semiconductor device with three connections, capable of amplification in addition to
rectification.
Integrated Circuit-an electronic circuit formed on a small piece of semiconducting material, performing
the same function as a larger circuit made from discrete components.
potentiometer-a three-terminal resistor with a sliding or rotating contact that forms an adjustable
voltage divider
Switch-Turns something on or off
