Unit Fractions: Grade 3 Lesson Plan

This semi-detailed lesson plan aims to teach students to visualize and identify unit fractions with denominators of 10 and below. The lesson will involve preliminary activities like reviewing shapes and fractions. Students will then learn about Mae Ann's birthday cake that was divided into 10 equal parts. Through group activities of writing and identifying fractions in diagrams, students will practice visualizing and writing unit fractions. The lesson concludes with an evaluation to assess student understanding.

III. LEARNING PROCEDURE

A. Preliminary Activities
Good morning class!

DRILL
Class, look around in our room, look for an object and identify its name and shape.

REVIEW

I will show you some shapes and you are going to tell me how many parts are there in
each of the following shapes divided. Is that clear?

If Mae Ann get 1 of its part and give it to Coleen, the part she gave to Coleen is 1/10
part of the cake. (write on the board)

Okay, again how many part of the cake did she give?
We call it now 1/10 because the cake was divided into 10 equal parts which will be the
denominator and 1 that she gave will be the numerator.
Did you get?
And this 1/10 we call it as Fraction
What fraction is this?

(Show a rectangle shaped paper divided into 6 equal parts with a shaded part.)
How many parts did the rectangle divided?
How many shaded part?
Who can write the fraction?

(Show another shape divided into 4 equal parts with a shaded part.)

How many parts did the rectangle divided?

How many shaded part?
Who can write the fraction?

3. GROUP ACTIVITY

This time we are going to have a group activity.

(Assign the groups)

Each group will select a leader to guide the members in doing the activity and to report
your work.
But before that who can give me the standards while working the group activity?
(Call some pupils to answer)

(Show the chart of the standards in doing the activity

GROUP 1

Direction: Write the fraction shown in each diagram.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

_________ _________ _________ _________ ________

GROUP 2

Direction: Divide the whole part and shade according to the given fraction.

5. GENERALIZATION

If I have a cake, how will you illustrate and identify fraction?

Let us read altogether.

6. Valuing
If you have also a cake are you going to share it with the others?
What kind of person are you if you know how share what you have?

C. APPLICATION

Now, get 2 sheets of paper and a color.

I will tell what you are going to do. Are you now ready?
First sheet. Fold your paper into 3, shade 1 part and tell me what fraction it tells.
(call one pupil to answer)

Second sheet, fold your paper into 7, shade 1 part and tell me the fraction it shown
