INTRODUCTION
Max Weber was a German sociologist, philosopher and economist. His work of
rationalization and rationality has influenced the entire political science discipline.. His
ideas contributed to the economic success of Protestant groups in the early stages of
European capitalism. Weber believed that religion actually gave rise to the spread of modern
capitalism. All through this assignment we will have a discussion on ideas discussed by Max
weber on religion , RATIONALITY and nature of modern state. Weber defined state as a
system of administration and law. WEBER'S main intellectual concern was in understanding
the processes of rationalisation, secularisation and disenchantment . Weber argued that
power can take a variety of forms.

nature of modern state.? According to my understanding, His study promulgates that how
far a particular sect of religion can influence the economic behaviour of its followers.

given to its peculiar structures and dynamics. Weber believed that religion actually gave rise

INTRODUCTION TO MAX WEBER
Max Weber is one of the promethean figures of political thought. He was a jurist , economist
and a politician all rolled in one . Weber thought reveals his inner conflict he is concerned
with meaning that men had given to life . as a disenchanted man he saw a contradiction
between the rationalizing society and the need for faith and between science and action He
has the left a great imprint upon political science , he was a profound scholar a reader and a
prolific writer. Max Weber was born on 21st April 1864 in Germany in comparatively rich
protested family.1 Weber's great capacity for disciplined intellectual effort together with his
unquestionable brilliance led to his meteoric professional advance when year after his
appointment at Berlin he became a full professor in Political Science and political economy.
We were sought to develop scientific approach to overcome their deficiencies. Some of the
major works of weber are as follows:
• Max weber on law in Economy and society – 1945
• General Economic theory – 1927
• The theory of Social and economic organisation- 1947
• The protestants Ethic and spirit of capitalism
Max Weber had an enormous theoretical impact on the development of political realism. His
famous definition of politics “striving for a share of power or for influence on the distribution
of power. seems to express clearly his understanding of all politics in terms of power
politics.
MAX WEBER : RELIGION
Max Weber believed religion could be a force for social change religion is a social institution
because it includes belief and practices that serve the needs of a society religion 2 is also an
example of a cultural Universal because it is found in all societies in one form or another.
What weber was concerned within the sociology of religion was not religion on everyday
life on political administrative economic and moral behaviour in different historical situations
that he tried to understand and reduces to order his study says that religion which is based on
cultural needs of man has now added new dimensions to human life human development.

Weber studied Confucianism in Ancient China, Hinduism in ancient India and Judaism in
ancient Palestine (West Asia). Confucianism in China:
• Weber believe that religion being a persuasive and universal institution is deeply
rooted in human beings it is not just STRICT institution but also exert a tremendous
influence upon all other institutions.
• weber tries to establish relation between religion and ethics on the one hand and the
economic behaviour on the other he tries to validate his ideas on this issue with the
help of comparative studies of world religion
• Weber major concern was to emphasize to the extent to which the religious
conception of the world of existence have influence the economic behaviour of
various society especially the Western society. 3
• Max weber initiated a large-scale study of religion around the globe his principal
interest was in large Global religion with million of believers he conducted in-depth
studies of ancient Judaism the fundamental purpose of Weavers research was to
discover religion impact on social change
• To weber Christianity was a salvation religion that did claim people can be
saved when they convert to certain belief and moral codes. He examined the
effects of religion on economic activities and noticed that heavily protested societies
such as those in England and Germany were the most highly developed capitalist
societies
• According to him it was the ideas beliefs values and worldview of human to tie a
society that guided with their member acted even in the economic sphere to lead and
prescribed certain guidelines of behaviour 4
• Weber was less concerned with the ethical Doctrine as expounded by the theology of
them with these doctrines in their popular form at the guide their behaviour he wanted
to comprehend capitalism as a civilization.
Max weber spent much of his life studying religion he was described himself as religiously
civilised. Interested in the system of ideas of the worlds religion in the spirit of capitalism and
initialisation of the modern system of value, he was also interested in the structure of world's

religion. Important concern was the relationship between variety of the world religions and
the development occurred in capitalist economic system of the west. His work on religion and
capitalism includes cross cultural historical research.
RESEARCH ON DIFFERENT RELIGIONS
BY MAX WEBER
JUDAISM IN WEST ASIA : This notion United them in the belief
that they were the chosen ones of God and must help to establish God Kingdom on earth.
Judaism has had a profound influence on Western civilization. As a result, moral and ethical
ideas developed by Judaism helped shape Western ideas about law, morality, and social
justice. Judaism influenced other areas of Western civilization including religious belief,
literature, and weekly schedules. 5 Weber says Judaism could have generated the spirit of
capitalism however certain historical force is prevented this. Weber notes that Judaism not
only fathered Christianity and Islam, but was crucial to the rise of the modern Western
world, Weber desired to delineate the uniqueness of western capitalism and the values.
HINDUISM IN INDIA : since once present condition is believed to be
the consequence of past did weber felt that Hindus had no motivation to improve their
economic condition we were saved Hindus could not consider it worthwhile to put in the
thought of hard work that capitalism demanded. He believed that mere material
conditions like trade technology and Finance are not enough to promote capitalism
India and China had both of these get the value systems of the society is versus that the
pursuit of wealth for own sake and National Organisation of work to achieve this purpose
did not make sense. Weber's thesis is that the Hindu ethic was a hindrance to capitalistic
growth in India, while the protestant ethic did help early capitalism in the West. 6Weber
expressed as strictly negative attitude by dealing with the religion of India towards the
possibility of national capital is an existing with the ethos of Hinduism
CONFUCIANISM IN CHINA Weber emphasized that
Confucianism tolerated the simultaneous existence of many popular cults and made no effort

to organize them as part of a religious doctrine, while nonetheless curtailing the political
ambitions of their priests. Instead it taught adjustment to the world.
The ideas can be summed up as Belief in the order of the universe ,Men should aim at being
in harmony with nature and behaviour is to be guided by tradition. The stress on harmony
traditionalism and family or applications are quite contradictory to the relentless pursuit of
profit for its own sake in did the spirit of capitalism would probably have been considered to
be a bad manners. Confucianism is one of the most influential religious philosophies in
the history of China, and it has existed for over 2,500 years. It is concerned with inner
virtue, morality, and respect for the community and its values. Weber saw the
relationship between religion and capitalism in China is that China's religious system is a
factor in the inability for capitalism to rise within the country. Because Confucian teachings
were conservative and told people to maintain their role in social order, the philosophy was
used by the state to keep the status quo from that time forward.
RATIONALITY
Max Weber idea is about the rationalisation of religion we were spent much time and energy
to study and analyse the various religion around the world he wanted to give up those
principle of religious teaching which is barrier obstacle in the way of rationalisation of
religion. Weber saw modernisation as a process of rationalisation that affects economic
life , law administration and religion eliminating traditional ideas and customary
practices in favour of formulae rational criteria it underpins the emergence of
capitalism Bureaucracy and the legal state. Rationality in WEBER'S work refers to a unique
type of social action a particular relationship between ideas and action rather than to a
General process in the development of ideas.7
• Rationalisation is an ideal type and as an historical force appeared in much of
WEBER'S writing. He regards the development of rational forms to be one of the
most important characteristics of development for society and capitalism
• In his view rationalisation consists of a set of social actions governed by a reason or
reasoning calculation rational pursuit of one's interest

• WEBER'S focus on the trend of rationalisation 8led him to concern himself with the
operation and expansion of large scale enterprises in both the public and private
sectors of modern society Weber was very concerned about the impact that
rationalisation and bureaucratization had on socio culture Systems by its very
nature Bureaucracy generates an enormous degree of an regulated and often
unperceived social power
• The rationalization of society is a concept that was created by Max Weber.
Rationalization refers to the process by which modern society has increasingly
become concerned with: Efficiency: achieving the maximum results with a minimum
amount of effort.
• Weber noted that the sacred is the uniquely an altered discipline this view religion in
the West altar at amended for visualisation and it played a key role in the
rationalisation of the Other sectors of society
• In The rationalisation of religion the priesthood is not only group that play a key role
but also the profit and their followers profit mobilize the followers priest possess a
systematic system of religious concept that is different from others
In his writings weber used RATIONALITY in various ways . Different types of
RATIONALITY is as follows:
1. SUBSTANTIVE RATIONALITY
Substantive rationality is a concept used to describe certain aspects of human decision-
making processes that can relate to personal life, community life, economic prosperity,
personal or societal effectiveness. 9 Weber termed this SUBSTANTIVE rationality and
considered it problematic in modern society in that generation social life make it difficult for
people to pursue particular values. Substantive rationality refers to the clusters of values that
lead people in their everyday lives, Therefore, substantive rationality means the success or
failure that due to actions are driven by economical orientation
2. FORMAL RATIONALITY
8
Weber puts himself in the position of an ideal typically constructed subject and ex amines the Cosmos from
the perspective of the subject
9 Weber's SUBSTANTIVE RATIONALITY availaible at [Link]

Weber defines formal rationality as the degree to an action happens as a result of quantitative
and appropriate calculations WEBER'S fear was that formal rationality was becoming more
dominant in modern Western society with substantive rationality declining in
IMPORTANCE 10. Formalization can render several contradictions visible through a
mechanical form of simplification. Thus, formal calculation is a kind of rationalization which
focuses on the process not the result. This formal rationality and the organizational features
associated with them tend to crowd out other forms.
3. THEORITICAL RATIONALITY
Theoretical rationality involves “an increasingly theoretical mastery of reality by means of
increasingly precise and abstract concepts” . Weber labels the modern society as a capitalist-
bureaucratic society. Abstract concept form an essential part of logical reasoning for critical
models these attempt to describe explain or understand the world in terms of models that are
constructed from observation and reasoning. Weber's primary focus on the structure of
society lay in the elements of class, status, and power. Similar to Marx, Weber saw class as
economically determined. Society, he believed, was split between owners and labourers.
4. PRACTICAL RATIONALITY
Practical rationality involves the individual who considers ends, and on some systematic
basis decide what is the best means or course of action to pursue in order to achieve these
ends. It involves the individual who considers ends and on some systematic basis decide what
the best means of course of action to pursue in order to achieve these ends .
NATURE OF MODERN STATE
Weber main intellectual concept was in understanding the process of rationalisation
secularization and disenchantment he argued that such processes results from a new way of
thinking about the world and are associated with the rise of capitalism and modernity. Weber
defined the modern state as a community that successfully claims a monopoly over violence
within a geographical area, which required it to have legitimate and legal authority. The
concepts of violence, territoriality, and legitimacy are the definitive factors of Weber's
modern state. We were defined the state largely in two terms first the state was the

independent legal system of Administration with the authority 11of a defined geographical
region secondly it was a symbol of collective action and community. The modern state could
not only raise Armies was also demand loyalty from its States citizens. He was concerned
interested in issues of power and conflict in society, the different interest groups in society
implied that state institutions were necessary if order was to be maintained. As legislation
increased, however, the administration would be less effective. According to weber state in
which power is centralised and exercised by sovereign control over a clearly defined territory.
Modern states are ruled by a centralised power and authority. In his DEFINITION weber
calls the state as
• System of Administration and law
• It is a symbol of collective action which means what ever the state performs is always
for the general public
• A modern state excise is domination over the community
• The state is independent if it is not independent it would not be possible for it to
exercise control over the members
• According to weber the state is a public organisation and its authority extends over
all the inhabitants
For Weber, modernity meant increased rationality, or a calculated determination to increase
the efficiency of a choice or action and a corresponding decline in tradition. In this process,
the search for truth, profit, and bureaucracy increased as well. Weber was pessimistic and
critical about the effects of modernity. Max Weber declared modern society to be
“disenchanted." Max Weber worried that modern societies were prone to a condition he
called "anomie."
CONCLUSION
It is evident from the above discussion that theories propounded by Max weber created a
major impact on modern society. The fundamental purpose of Weber's research was to
discover religion's impact on social change. He conducted in‐depth studies of Ancient

Judaism. All through this assignment we had a brief discussion on RATIONALITY and its
types and modern state as prescribed by Max weber. Weber's main concerned was to what
extent religious conception of the world of existence have influenced the economic
behaviour. Weber suggested that the protestant institution and its ethics have played an
important role in the development of their economy.
