Primark, the clothing retailer, last month announced it had fired three suppliers in India
after it was discovered that they had ---[1]--- work to home workers who used child labor. George
Weston, Chief Executive of Associated British Foods, which owns Primark, ---[2]--- that the
factories had been involved in ‘systematic deception’ and that regular audits had failed to uncover
the violations. Tesco, the UK retailer, faces allegations of neglect of factory workers after a report
from the charity War on Want said that t its researchers found workers in a factory in Bangalore
being paid ‘half a living wage’. Is it possible for companies with suppliers in developing countries
to ---[3]--- that their goods have been produced in conditions that are ethically acceptable? And
what kind of audit system could provide consumers with such a guarantee?

As retail companies continue to ---[4]--- prices down, then clothing factories, working on small
margins, are going to try to cut cost – and that can mean they employ child labor because it’s
cheap. No one with any experience of supply chain in Asia will be ---[5]--- that regular audits did
not expose violations. Companies need to move away from simplistic, unreliable inspections
towards building trust with their suppliers. That means working together to develop good
corporate social responsibility practices rather than just carrying out spot checks. It also means
getting suppliers to see that acceptable employment practices are in their interest and helping them
to develop the policies and practices that will make them a trusted supplier. Simply cancelling the
contracts with factories that indirectly ---[6]--- children has the potential to make a bad situation
worse. Where are those children now, I wonder?

Studies show that auditing suppliers has already had a real ---[7]--- on improving ethical practices
in developing countries. The problem has now moved to the level of subcontractors and work
done inside homes. But the problem of child labor in developing countries can only be solved
through economic development that gives children real ---[8]---. Poor parents in India, Pakistan or
Vietnam cannon choose between sending their children to a school or a factory. The real choice is
between eating or going hungry. It is possible to guarantee ethical working conditions. But
companies need to take an active role in the manufacturing process rather than relying on
independent ---[9]--- who visit occasionally. Applica markets and distributes kitchen and home
products, and its products are manufactured mainly in China and Mexico. It has long-standing
strategic partnerships with most of its manufacturers. All must ---[10]--- to quality controls and
codes of conduct, including social responsibility. Engineers and marketers form Applica spend a
large amount of time with these manufacturers. They also have on-site teams whose task is to

audit the manufacturers and work with them to ensure that quality and ethical practices are
maintained.

Common questions

Auditing has improved ethical practices among suppliers by enhancing transparency and accountability, particularly in developing countries where regulatory frameworks may be weaker. Regular audits identify unethical practices, such as child labor, and ensure compliance with social responsibility standards. However, audits must evolve beyond simple inspections to include building trust and partnerships with suppliers to promote sustainable improvements. Challenges remain, especially with subcontractors and home workers where direct oversight is difficult .

Ethical considerations in supply chain management, like ensuring no child labor is used, can significantly affect a company's reputation and operational stability. Companies that commit to ethical practices and transparency build trust with consumers, leading to potential market advantages and customer loyalty. Conversely, failing audits or uncovering unethical practices can result in public backlash, legal repercussions, and loss of business, as seen in cases where companies had to fire suppliers for unethical practices . Companies need robust audit systems and collaboration with suppliers to uphold ethical standards while avoiding simplistic solutions like contract cancellations that could worsen social issues .

A block train system involves a single shipper using a whole train that runs directly from the loading point to the destination without any assembling or disassembling of carriages. This method contrasts with single-wagon or piggyback systems, as it minimizes handling, reduces transit times, and increases efficiency by dedicating the entire train to a single shipment. This can lead to cost savings and improved punctuality in deliveries .

Customs invoices are specific documents required by some countries when importing goods, and they include more details than a commercial invoice. They are essential for customs declaration and evaluation of duties owed, ensuring legal compliance of the imported goods. Unlike commercial invoices, which primarily function as billing and sales documents for transactions between seller and buyer, customs invoices serve as key tools for regulatory and tax purposes .

Order picking, which involves selecting and assembling items from stock for shipments, enhances supply chain performance by improving accuracy and shipment speed. Efficient order picking processes can reduce the time between order receipt and dispatch, leading to faster delivery times and higher customer satisfaction. Technology, such as automation and inventory management systems, can optimize this process, although it requires initial investment and training .

'Cash on delivery' (COD) allows customers to pay for goods upon receipt, minimizing risk for buyers and potentially increasing sales for sellers by encouraging purchases with a reduced sense of risk. However, COD can complicate logistics transactions by introducing delays in cash flow and increasing administrative and delivery management burdens. It can also lead to higher return rates due to buyer non-acceptance or non-payment at delivery, requiring careful consideration by companies when choosing payment methods .

Reverse logistics involves the collection and handling of used or damaged goods and reusing transit equipment, which plays a vital role in a company's sustainability initiatives. It reduces waste by recycling materials and products, thereby lessening the environmental impact. Reverse logistics can improve a company's corporate social responsibility profile by showcasing commitments to eco-friendly practices, which is increasingly important to consumers and regulatory bodies .

'Just-in-Time' (JIT) inventory management is designed to minimize the amount of inventory a business holds by coordinating the arrival of materials just before they are needed in production. This reduces storage costs and risks of overstocking but requires precise planning and supply chain coordination to avoid delays. JIT can enhance logistics efficiency by reducing warehouse space needs and increasing the responsiveness of supply chains to demand changes, but it also leaves businesses vulnerable to disruptions in delivery .

'Tracking and tracing' systems provide real-time visibility of goods in transit, enhancing logistics efficiency and customer service. These systems allow companies to monitor shipments' locations, predict delivery times, and quickly respond to any disruptions or delays. Benefits include improved customer satisfaction due to greater transparency, reduced risk of lost shipments, and enhanced ability to manage and optimize routes for cost and time efficiency .

A 'certificate of origin' is a critical document in international trade that states where goods were produced, often required by customs authorities to determine tariffs and compliance with trade agreements. Benefits include verifying the legitimacy of goods' origins, potentially reducing tariffs under trade agreements, and increasing transparency. However, challenges involve the administrative burden of acquiring the document, potential delays in shipments if documentation is incorrect or incomplete, and costs associated with certification processes .
