Mathematics in Modern World Activity 1

This document contains instructions for an activity involving mathematics. It asks students to complete 5 parts: (1) document patterns in their community, (2) measure objects approximating the golden ratio, (3) measure body parts of family members and calculate ratios, (4) explain the importance of math in their field of study, and (5) determine the next terms and common differences or ratios in several mathematical patterns. The activity is meant to showcase the hidden beauty of math and its relevance to various disciplines.

Activity #1
Mathematics in the Modern World
Module 1

Name: Date:
Course/Year/Section:

General Direction: Editing, animation, and labels in the photo are necessary for extra points.
Please use a separate sheet of paper.

Part I. Provide documentation/presentation of the different patterns (symmetry, crack,

tessellation/tiling, fractal, spiral, spots, stripes, dunes, waves and the like) available in your
community/surrounding to showcase the hidden beauty of Mathematics.

Part II. Kindly use a measuring tape (in centimeters) to get the proper measurement to provide at
least one object/entity that entails the approximate value of golden ratio (1.618), you can refer to
the given formula in the module.

Part III. Look at the diagram and then using a tape measure, measure carefully the 3 sets of pairs
of your body measurements (in centimeters). Fill in the table and use a calculator to work out the
ratios/divisions.
