PREDESIGN OF PIPE RACK.

Assuming pinned support at foundation:
If the beam at lower level is analyzed in detail according to Staad output:
If the result are compared with hand calculations it is clearly stated that designing clause is
lateral torsional buckling.
Hand calculation:
Stress Ratio = 1402 / 470 = 2.98 >>>> 1
Staad Output Report
Stress Ratio = 2.91 >>> 1
Assuming fixed support at foundation level.
Once again the beam located at lower level is analyzed, and critical condition is Lateral
Torsional Buckling:
Hand calculation:
Stress Ratio = 856 / 470 = 1.82 >>>> 1
Staad Output Report
Stress Ratio = 1.78 >>> 1
It is necessary to improve the capacity of the beam adding flange thickness. Some proposal are
presented down below:
Other possible solution is to locate bracing at the mid span and hence a truss in some place of
the structure to carry stability to foundation. The results for the beam are presented below:
Bracing at mid spam:
The condition is still unsafety.
Hand calculation:
Stress Ratio = 856 / 707 = 1.21 >>>> 1
Two bracing equal spacing:
The condition is still unsafety.
Hand calculation:
Stress Ratio = 856 / 812 = 1.05 >>>> 1
Other possibility is to modified in Staad Modification factor for Non-uniform moment
diagrams (Cb), since value 1 is clearly conservative:
