C. Disadvantages of existing systems
There are many disadvantages for vessel tracking
systems. These systems can only identify the location of
ships in which the apparatus is installed in, and not the
stranded fishermen. So this is not convenient for smaller
boats due to size and cost constraints. Smaller boats like
canoes do not have the necessary space and prerequisites for

with a wide range of peripherals, including WiFi and
Bluetooth wireless capabilities. Espressif has already pre-

A comparative study of different components required

makes and properties. The study was based on different
parameters like efficiency, range and cost.
B. Network Routing
A flooding approach is used to send packets between
nodes. In this approach, whenever a node receives a data
packet, it sends the packet to all other nodes other than
itself.

A major disadvantage of using flooding approach for
routing is that it can decrease the efficiency of the network
with more number of nodes. Optimization of the network
routing process should be done to avoid compromise on
efficiency and speed of packet transmission. Also, a
graphical user interface that enables users to easily view the
location of the stranded fishermen could be developed for a
better user experience and faster response time.
VII. CONCLUSION
The proposed system integrates hardware, such as the LoRa and ESP32 modules with the NEO-6M GPS, offering low-power, long-range communication and precise location tracking. The software component includes the Arduino IDE for programming the ESP32, Flutter for developing user interfaces, and Firebase Realtime Database for storing and syncing data, enhancing the system’s real-time response and usability. This combination allows for a seamless, comprehensive rescue solution by coordinating hardware capabilities with robust software applications .
Potential limitations of the proposed system include the dependency on the integrity of the mesh network, which can be affected by environmental factors, and the real-time location updates' reliance on stable internet connectivity. Future research could focus on integrating satellite communication for areas with poor connectivity, improving autonomous self-healing algorithms within mesh networks, and developing more robust power solutions to ensure system operational durability in severe conditions .
LoRa technology is particularly suited for the proposed rescue system because it offers long-range connectivity with low power consumption. This makes it ideal for physically constrained environments such as life jackets worn by fishermen. Additionally, LoRa supports mesh networking, which allows for robust and reliable data transmission through multiple nodes, increasing the likelihood of successful communication even if some nodes fail. Compared to alternatives like NB-IoT or Zigbee, LoRa provides better power efficiency and range, essential for real-time tracking in open sea conditions .
The proposed rescue system ensures data security and reliability through the use of LoRa technology, which offers secure long-range communication protected by encryption protocols inherent in the LoRaWAN specifications. Additionally, the mesh network topology provides reliability by enabling multiple communication paths, ensuring message delivery even if some nodes are compromised or fail. This redundancy and encryption help maintain secure and reliable data flows to shore facilities .
The ESP32 microcontroller provides multiple advantages, including low power consumption, integrated WiFi and Bluetooth support, and a higher clock speed compared to alternatives like Arduino microcontrollers. These features contribute to efficient power use, essential for prolonged use on battery-powered devices, and enable robust data transmission capabilities. The advanced processing ability supports the real-time operations critical for dynamic rescue scenarios by handling the GPS data and managing network connections efficiently .
The NEO-6M GPS module was chosen due to its compatibility with the ESP32 microcontroller, its low power features, and the inclusion of an external antenna and built-in EEPROM, which enhance its reliability and performance. In the proposed solution, it plays the essential role of capturing real-time location data of fishermen, crucial for directing rescue operations to the exact coordinates in cases of emergency .
The Firebase Realtime Database contributes by providing real-time synchronization of location data, allowing rescuers to see live updates of distressed fishermen’s locations. This is crucial for timely rescue interventions. However, its limitations may include dependency on reliable internet connectivity for data updates, which could be compromised in remote sea areas, potentially delaying rescue efforts in the absence of stored offline capabilities .
Existing vessel tracking systems primarily identify the location of large ships and not the fishermen. They are costly, consume high power, and are unsuited for small boats like canoes due to their size and installation requirements. These systems also struggle with efficiency in long-range transmissions and adverse weather conditions. The proposed system addresses these challenges by deploying a low-cost, low-power LoRa-based module capable of individual tracking, enabling real-time rescue operations specifically tailored for small-scale fishermen .
The mesh network topology enhances the effectiveness of the rescue system by allowing nodes to connect dynamically and non-hierarchically, providing multiple paths for data transmission. This increases redundancy and fault tolerance; if one node fails, data can still be routed through alternative paths. The self-healing properties of the mesh network ensure consistent communication, which is crucial in emergencies where node failure could be frequent due to harsh sea conditions .
The proposed system aims to address the difficulty of locating fishermen stranded at sea during natural disasters by providing a low-cost, energy-efficient mechanism to send distress signals. Existing systems are costly, consume high power, and are suitable only for larger vessels. They fail to locate individual fishermen as they focus only on vessels. In contrast, the proposed system uses a LoRa module to transmit real-time location data from life jackets, improving the efficiency and applicability to smaller boats .
