Gypsum Plaster Method Statement
After applying and smoothing the wall putty with a steel trowel, using sandpaper is recommended if further smoothing is desired. Sandpaper with 600 grit is used to fine-tune the finish. This step results in a smoother, more refined surface, enhancing the final appearance of the plaster and ensuring the even application of subsequent finishes such as paint .
A bonding agent should be stirred before use as it is a ready-to-use material. It must be applied using a 4-inch thick brush on both RCC and block work surfaces, following the location details provided in finishing plans. The surface should then be allowed to dry for at least 24 hours before starting the gypsum plastering work. The entire gypsum work needs to be completed within 10 days of applying the bonding agent, ensuring adequate adhesion .
The 6-inch bands left at window sills, door junctions, and skirting levels during plastering serve as unfinished areas that accommodate final adjustments after installation of frames, sills, or other architectural elements. They provide a transition zone that ensures a smooth and continuous plastered surface post-installation, effectively integrating structural components into the plastered wall .
To prepare surfaces for wall putty application, clean the surface by removing loose particles, dirt, grease, and foreign material via sandpaper or chipping. Areas of loose plaster should be removed and re-plastered. For uneven ceilings or walls, rich plaster is used to even them out. Cracks in the base plaster need to be filled with crack fill. Proper surface preparation ensures the even application, proper adhesion of wall putty, and avoids defects in the final finish .
Proper alignment of level strips is crucial for achieving a flat and uniformly finished surface in gypsum plastering. Level strips, installed at specified distances, guide the application thickness and ensure the straightness of the plaster. Vertical alignment is confirmed using a plumb bob while right angles and room dimensions are checked with tape. Any deviation in these parameters can lead to uneven application, affecting both aesthetics and structural integrity of the plastered surface .
The time limit of 60 minutes for using the prepared wall putty mixture is specified to prevent the paste from setting prematurely, which could cause difficulty in application and compromise the finish quality. Disregarding this guideline could result in hardened or lumpy putty that does not adhere properly to the surface, potentially leading to a substandard finish with poor bonding strength .
Applying gypsum plaster directly without using a bonded surface may lead to poor adhesion, weakened plaster integrity, and increased risk of detachment. The bonding agent is designed to enhance adhesion between gypsum plaster and RCC surfaces by creating a bond that accommodates any surface irregularities. Skipping this step could compromise the plaster's durability and long-term performance on the structure .
Gypsum plaster thickness is restricted to 12-15mm to prevent cracking and ensure the integrity of the plaster. If the final thickness of the plaster exceeds 15mm due to surface undulations, a back coat is recommended. This back coat consists of a 6 to 10mm thick cement sand mortar applied to brickwork or RCC. Before commencing gypsum work, ensure the curing of the back coat with a rich 1:4 cement mortar. Leave a 6-inch band at window sills, door junctions, and skirting levels for finishing post-installation .
Allowing the wall putty mix to stand for about ten minutes after initial stirring permits the additives to dissolve properly in the mixture. This resting period ensures the creation of a homogeneous, consistent, and lump-free paste, thereby enhancing the quality and performance of the wall putty when applied. Remixing the paste afterward for 2 minutes further refines its consistency for optimal application .
Before applying gypsum plaster to an RCC surface, ensure it is free from dust or chemicals to prevent adverse chemical reactions. There should be a minimum gap of seven days between the completion of brick masonry curing and internal plaster application. A drying period of 24 hours is necessary for the bonding agent applied to RCC and block work. Additionally, no holes for scaffolding support should be made in the masonry. Level strips of minimum 2 inches in width must be installed not exceeding 24 inches apart to check surface alignment with an aluminum straight edge. The strips must also be checked for vertical alignment and right angles using a plumb bob .
