Economic dispatch of power generation
This tutorial concerns a problem of economic dispatch of power generation.
There are a number of power generators, required to satisfy power and
heat demands of the market. Each power generator has a different linear
cost function, and each power generator has a capacity limit. The amount of
heat generated, as a product of heat, is linearly associated with the amount
of electricity produced.
The optimisation problem is to determine the optimal dispatch of power
generations among different power units so as to achieve the minimum
cost, while delivering adequate power and heat to the market.

𝑖 power generators
Input data
𝐶𝑖 cost coefficients of power unit 𝑖 for generating a unit power [$]
𝑈𝑖 maximum production level of power unit 𝑖
𝐻𝐸𝑅𝑖 heat-to-electricity ratio for unit 𝑖
𝐷𝐸𝑝 power demand
𝐷𝐸ℎ heat demand
Decision variable
𝑃𝑖 Power generation of unit 𝑖
𝐻𝑖 Heat generation of unit 𝑖
Objective function
Objective function is to minimise the total cost of producing power:
𝑚𝑖𝑛 ∑ 𝐶𝑖 𝑃𝑖
𝑖
Power production from all units must add up to satisfy market demand:
∑ 𝑃𝑖 ≥ 𝐷𝐸𝑝
𝑖
Heat as a by-product is related to the electricity production level by HER
parameter:
𝐻𝑖 = 𝐻𝐸𝑅𝑖 𝑃𝑖 ∀𝑖
Heat demand from the market also needs to be met:
∑ 𝐻𝑖 ≥ 𝐷𝐸ℎ
𝑖
Each power unit has a capacity limit:
0 ≤ 𝑃𝑖 ≤ 𝑈𝑖 ∀𝑖
