MIRANDA RIGHTS

=After placing the suspect under arrest, the officer will say something similar to, “You have the right to
remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have a right to an
attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you.”

*YOU HAVE TO REMAIN SILENT. EXPLANATION

= If there’s one thing you need to remember during an arrest, it’s that you have the right to remain silent.
Regardless of the situation, once your rights are invoked, you do not have to say anything further. You
will be given the opportunity to speak with your lawyer or have one appointed to you. Invoking your right
to remain silent may be what saves you from conviction.

*ANYTHING YOU SAY CAN AND WILL BE USED AGAINST YOU IN A COURT OF LAW.
EXPLANATION

=I like the two words out of there are “can” and “will.” Definitely anything you say, do will be used
against you, and it will be used against you in the way that is most harmful to you. That’s the way the
system works.

*YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO AN ATTORNEY. EXPLAINATIONS

=That means a person has a right to an attorney. If they request an attorney, all questioning has to stop
until they have an attorney. That means that even if they can’t afford an attorney, they still have a right to
have an attorney appointed before they’re asked any more questions.

*IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD AN ATTORNEY, ONE WILL BE APPOINTED FOR YOU.
EXPLAINATIONS

= That means a person has a right to an attorney. If they request an attorney, all questioning has to stop
until they have an attorney.

VAWC

= Violence Against Women & their children, any act or series of acts committed by any PERSON.
against a WOMAN who is his wife, former wife, or with whom the person has or had a sexual or dating
relationships, or. with whom he has a common child, or. against her child/child under her care.
