Liquid-Liquid Extraction Tutorial Guide

The document outlines a tutorial on liquid-liquid extraction processes, presenting two problems related to the extraction of dioxane and ethylene glycol using benzene and furfural solvents, respectively. Problem 1 involves calculating solvent requirements for different extraction stages to remove dioxane from an aqueous solution. Problem 2 requires determining the equilibrium composition and amounts of extract and raffinate phases from a mixture of ethylene glycol and water contacted with furfural.

PCE 352 Separation Processes II

Tutorial 1: Liquid-Liquid Extraction

Problem 1
1,000 kg of an aqueous solution of 30 wt% dioxane is to be treated with benzene at 25°C to
remove 95% of the dioxane. The benzene is dioxane free. Water and benzene can be
assumed almost insoluble. The distribution coefficient of dioxane at low concentrations is
constant and has a value of KD = 1.2. Calculate the solvent requirements for:
(a) A single-stage batch extraction
(b) Two cross-current stages using equal amounts of benzene
(c) Two counter-current stages

(a) (b) (c)

Problem 2
Calculate the equilibrium composition and amounts of extract and raffinate phases produced
when a 100 kg mixture of 45% by weight ethylene glycol and 55% water solution is contacted
with 200 kg of pure furfural solvent at 25 oC and 101 kPa. Use the equilateral triangular
diagram provided.
