Polylactide is a biodegradable polymer made from corn, but it is too weak for commercial use. The paper presents a method for toughening polylactide by incorporating rubber particles to form novel copolymers. Specifically, it describes preparing blends of polylactide and hydrocarbon rubber, which significantly increases flexibility. The synthesis of flexible polymer blends from polylactide and rubber

Introduction
1 Polylactide (PLA) has received much attention in recent years due to its
biodegradable properties, which offer important economic benefits. 2 PLA is a
polymer obtained from corn and is produced by the polymerisation of lactide. 3 It
has many possible uses in the biomedical field1 and has also been investigated as
a potential engineering material. 4 However, it has been found to be too weak
under impact to be used commercially. 5 One way to toughen polymers is to
incorporate a layer of rubber particles and there has been extensive research
regarding the rubber modification of PLA. 6 For example, Penney et al. showed
that PLA composites could be prepared using blending techniques and more
recently, Hillier established the toughness of such composites.7 However, although
the effect of the rubber particles on the mechanical properties of copolymer
systems was demonstrated over two years ago, little attention has been paid to the
selection of an appropriate rubber component. 8 The present paper presents a set
of criteria for selecting such a component. 9 On the basis of these criteria it then
describes the preparation of a set of polymer blends using PLA and a hydrocarbon
rubber (PI). 10 This combination of two mechanistically distinct polymerisations
formed a novel copolymer in which the incorporation of PI significantly increased
flexibility.

Combining mechanistically distinct polymerisations to prepare PLA-PI blends results in novel copolymers by integrating different polymer attributes into a single material. The unique interactions between distinct polymer types, like PLA and PI, facilitate enhancements in material properties such as flexibility and impact resistance, allowing for innovative applications in areas where traditional polymers may fall short. This approach enables the tailored design of materials with superior mechanical characteristics compared to homogeneous systems .

Hillier demonstrated the effectiveness of PLA composites by conducting experiments that highlighted the improved toughness of the material when modified with rubber particles. This empirical research built upon prior studies by showing a clear increase in the composite material's durability, positioning rubber modification as a viable solution to enhance PLA's mechanical performance .

The research on PLA and rubber composites reflects broader trends in polymer science that emphasize sustainability, biodegradability, and enhanced material performance in specialized applications. As the need for environmentally friendly materials grows, research focuses on developing composites that can meet industry standards while reducing environmental footprints. Innovations in processing techniques such as blending broaden the functional scope of traditional materials, aligning with the global shift towards sustainable material science .

PLA's biodegradable properties contribute to sustainability efforts by reducing plastic pollution and decreasing landfill accumulation, as PLA breaks down more rapidly compared to traditional plastics. This property supports industries aiming to minimize environmental impact and promote circular economies. Furthermore, utilizing PLA can aid in complying with environmental regulations and consumer demand for sustainable products .

The document outlines specific criteria for selecting the rubber component in PLA blends, emphasizing compatibility with PLA and the ability to enhance mechanical properties such as toughness and flexibility. While detailed criteria are not itemized, the emphasis is on selecting a rubber that can work synergistically with PLA to form a composite with improved performance metrics, as demonstrated by the significant enhancement observed with the hydrocarbon rubber PI .

The mechanical weakness of PLA under impact has been a barrier to its commercial use because it limits the range of applications where durability and impact resistance are critical requirements. In engineering and biomedical domains where materials are subject to mechanical stress, PLA's susceptibility to fracture under impact conditions diminishes its functionality and reliability, necessitating modifications such as rubber blending to address these limitations .

Selecting an appropriate rubber component for PLA blends is challenging because, although the impact of rubber particles on polymer systems is well-documented, little attention has historically been paid to the careful selection of a compatible rubber type. This oversight may lead to suboptimal performance of the composite material, as incompatibility can affect the polymer's mechanical properties .

Incorporating rubber particles into PLA blends significantly enhances their mechanical properties by increasing flexibility and impact resistance. The presence of these particles within the composite alters its structure, thereby enhancing toughness. Hillier demonstrated that rubber-modified PLA composites have increased toughness, which is primarily due to the rubber component's ability to absorb and dissipate energy under stress .

The use of PLA in polymer blends offers significant economic benefits primarily due to its biodegradable properties, which reduce environmental impact and potentially lower waste management costs. This can be particularly beneficial in industries looking to reduce their ecological footprint. Additionally, as PLA is derived from renewable resources such as corn, it supports agricultural economies and reduces dependency on petroleum-based materials .

Hillier's research on PLA provides a foundational understanding of how rubber modifications can significantly enhance the impact resistance of biopolymers, thus guiding future research to explore similar methodologies in other biodegradable systems. This research sets a precedent for investigating material toughness through hybridization and modifications, encouraging further exploration of biopolymer applications in engineering disciplines where durability is paramount .
